a girl's chances at mit

this is for my friend who doesn't have an account. she's right here so she's going to tell you guys everything you need to know!

i already have safeties and matches, but MIT is one of my reach schools (along with brown and harvard). please tell me what kind of letter you think i'll get next month!!

i'm a white female, senior of course, first generation college student
public school in massachusetts (yes i know that doesn't help much), hardest classes including 5 AP's this year
ranked 1st in a class of 217 (gpa 4.8/5 W, 4.0 UW)
2180 SAT (790 math)
SAT II's: 760/730/640 (yuck)

-several awards from school & town for academics
-varsity track team (a few awards for high jump/sprinting & scholar athlete award)
-national honor society
-high school band (a couple awards for this, one is just local and one national)
-volunteering at local boys & girls club summer activities and community service through church
-steady job at local library since freshman year

i want to major in biology and i took a biology class this summer at a local private university & loved it!!

i dunno, anything else you need to know? leave a post and my friend will fill you in on missing stuff. thanks so much guys!!!!!!

bump, please!

looks good to me, but then again what do i know, i'm also a senior in high school...

thank you! anyone else?

Do you have any more activities?!

usually, the acceptance rate for girls in MIT is close to 30%, while that of boys is about 10% (around 8000 boys vs. 3000 girls applied); i will say you have a half chance of getting in and another half of being on the waiting list.

Go ahead, bet your house. 0% chance of being rejected. yep. you are that fabulous.

IHS- i don't really know what else she has for activities besides the ones listed already. i know she volunteers a lot with the church- helping the elderly and doing activities for the children.
thanks for the input so far, i'll relay it all to her.

And another half chance of knowing about addition!

:-P

pebbles beat me to it.

bump please, anyone?

bump please. i don't want to tell her that hardly anyone responded to her chances!!
do you think her chances are weak, average, above average, excellent, etc??
thanks!

good essay and u will get in

thanks for the response!

Her SAT IIs hurt, but her class rank might make up for them. Being a first generation student is a major plus.

I think the essay is going to make the difference.

uh... overall the response has been overly positive... I can't tell if it's just the bitter-at-female-applicants-so-exaggerate-the-difference-it-makes at work or if people actually believe that anything in that stats list makes her stand out as an applicant... cause I dont really see it.

I'd say average chances.

Although the percentage of girls admitted is much higher than the percentage of guys admitted, it is still only about 30%. You really can't predict these admissions decisions, so good luck!

Wow, is that true? (30% chance for girls) Where did everyone get that stat?

I agree with you pebbles. Nothing stands out at all except the first generation college student part. I really don't know how much that counts for. For this person's sake, I hope it counts for a lot, because otherwise, she really doesn't have good chances.

Well, it's not quite 30, I think it is either 24 or 27%...I don't remember. The data is somewhere on MIT's website- they have the number of applicants and how many were admitted broken down by gender.

I don't have nearly enough information to make any form of call. The scores/grades are certainly acceptable, so that part of the application is fine. But as to match? There isn't much there to judge. That turns on a wide variety of stuff we cannot see. What came through in the essays? How did the interview go? What did the recommendations say? If you get straight A's that could be explained by a teacher as a thirst for learning, or by brown-nosing and grade-grubbing.

The numbers and a list of activities do not determine selection. if they did, then the Admissions staff could all retire and be replaced by a computer program. Anyone who is seriously attempting to guess admissions decisions from a profile like this one is really reaching.

One question that I guess that most Admissions staff are looking to answer is "Why does this person want to go to MIT?" Since you list both MIT and Brown as reach schools and since both of those are very, very different institutions, that's a question that may be critical. If you just want it as a "prize", then you are unlikely to get in.
