a glimpse of 2014 admittees

I did my now-routine shtick Sunday afternoon of being a guinea pig parent to talk to parents (and students) at the local Smith Club's reception for admitted students. 41 admitted from the area, about 10 came to the reception, including one ED acceptee and another, with her parents, who had sent in her deposit already.

At one point I was standing about ten feet away from four of the young women, talking to parents of two of them. I couldn't hear the exact words but the body language of the four and the music of their voices suggested a group of Smithies already engaged.

There were recent grads from '07, '08, and '09 to talk to the students...the '08 grad and I did some tag-team commentary that seemed to work well, each of us saying things the other would then amplify from the other's perspective.

Funniest moment: someone asked about the logistics of doing the actual cross-country move and I said that D spent more time loading her iPod than packing...the parents laughed and several of the young women gave the "I'm so down with that" look.

I know that Smith won't get all of them but we had a really strong group. C'mon, Samantha...Smith is a great place for you.

Yay. Samantha did decide to go to Smith. Huzzah!
The Smith PtP (Parent to Parent) network got a workout this morning.

Great news, TD! These college decisions are so arduous! Earlier in the month I had been given a parent’s email address by Smith Admissions to answer their questions. The daughter was a STRIDE so I shared our experience and then it was arranged that the daughter do an overnight with my daughter at Open Campus. I heard from the parent today that their daughter’s going to Smith. I’m thrilled! It is a workout but a satisfying one.
