A good idea to take 5 APs and work?

Okay so my parents are not rich. My father recently got sick so he is out of work. My sister and I have been helping my mom in rent and other expenses. I am currently a junior and I am taking challenging Ap courses. I have worked so hard into maintaining a very high GPA since middle school. But i was able to do that because besides EC’s… all I had to do was focus on my education. Which was very easy. But now I am president of clubs and have a lot of leading positions. but I started working in the summer and once my dad got sick I continued. And it is september and I already failed two quizzes. I don’t really study or even look at my book and I know that I should study for SATs and things. My mom told me that I should stop because she doesn’t need my help anymore but I don’t think she is telling the truth. I want to go to a very good school because that is my escape. Now, should I just start working twice as hard and do work and study or stop working so I can get the highest GPA I can get as well as SAT score? I am stuck. I feel like even if I continue if I mess up my junior year all this hard work will be for nothing and my mother will not be happy with that. What do you guys think? Have you taken AP classes while working? If so how did u manage your time? Thank you so much!

Can you cut back on EC’s? How many hours per week are you working? How many hours per night of homework?

My D has 8 classes (6 AP and 2 college), she also works and has a few clubs. It takes careful time management but it can be done.

Work as much as you can where you can. Complete assignemnts at lunch, in between classes, during blow-off classes. Since you’re a minor you get a half-hour break at work (at least in my state you do.) Go over some flashcards or look at some SAT stuff then. On days you don’t have to work, get ahead on assignments. Pull all-nighters if you have to. I work and take 4 AP classes, and I’m the president of three clubs. Just manage your time and you’ll be fine

Both your Mom and Dad want you to get into a good school and graduate. I would listen to your mom and stop working. Tell her that you are going to listen to her but you would like her to let you know if there is a time she needs your help. Also you can work over the summer and contribute. Ask if there are ways you can save money.
Keeping up your GPA is the most important job for you now.

DO NOT pull all nighters - growing brains need sleep (and cutting sleep fragilizes your brain and body). DO cut on your work hours. Your parents don’t want you to forfeit your future for a minimal, immediate gain. If you want to help your family, you need to cut your work hours and devote time to studying -and, when you graduate college and get a good job, set money aside for them. Ask if you can help in any way.
If you feel things are really tight, work during breaks, work on Friday nights and Saturdays, as that’s a sacrifice to your social life that won’t impact your future.
Being a great student is your most important responsibility to yourself and to your family.

Thank you so much guys! I will try for now to manage both. I will cut my hours but at the same time I will work on every time I get. Like lunch breaks etc. Thanks again!

^the poster who said “work every chance you get” meant work as in “study” (in response to you failing tests). Your first responsibility is to get those grades back up pronto.

Oh ya I understand lol.
