A GPA Query

hey everybody, can somebody tell me the difference between a weighted and an unvweighted GPA? also is a GPA calculated out of 4 or out of 5..
thanks..

Weighted GPA takes into account the difficulty of your classes. For instance, an A would give a 4.0 in a regular class, a 4.5 in an honors class and a 5.0 in an AP class (I'm making these numbers up--systems vary a LOT by school).
Unweighted does not take this into account. Unweighted GPA is calculated out of 4; with weighted it may vary.

if your school sends out transcripts with unweighted GPA,
would the colleges know that it's unweighted??

i took 5 AP courses, with a GPA below 4.0 (unless its weighted), and i dont like the way it looks. -_-

Colleges only look at your unweighted GPA. However, they also take into account your class selections and recalculate your GPA their own way.

whats the usual trend: is an unweighted GPA higher than a weighted GPA or is it the other way?
how do collegs look at only the unweighted? For example on the common app if the school counsellor puts in a GPA and marks it as weighted then how would colleges calculate the unweighted GPA..?

Weighted is usually higher because you get extra points for taking harder classes. colleges have their own systems for calculating gpas;...its all based on your grades so they can figure it out. but usually you submit your weighted and unweighted gpa. although you seem to know very little about GPAs, so does your school in U.A.E. even have GPA, because if they dont then you dont even need to worry about this. The point is get good grades and take hard classes. If you do that, that's all that matters.

well yea v do hav a GPA system that is hardly used. on that system i got a weighted 3.75/4.0..

question

when schools list their average GPA on their web site or boooks like PR is it W or UW?
