A guestion concerning finances

According to mcgill.ca the tuition fee is paid twice a year.(for every semester) The cost is over $13 000 for internationals. Is that price divided into two parts or is it 13k a semester? Or 13k a year? It's not clear on their web site. thx for any help :)

The website says annual tuition for international arts & science is $12,600 CAD per year.

$13 and there is no financial aid?!??!? O.o

I'm sure there is some financial aid.

Amaranto: That is a yearly cost, it varies slightly by faculty. It is divided into two for the semester payment. Be aware that there are many fees that are charged also, especially for the first semester ( the annual cost is billed with the first semester's tuition. ) The fees are high because it is a sneaky way of raising costs to Quebecers without having to increase tuition. There is very, very limited financial aid.
It perception of the cost depends on what you are used to in your home country- for those from the US, the cost is about 1/3 that of a equivalent rated private university.

Thank you mcgilldad. Your post explained a lot to me. :)

yeh mcgill has a lot of "other" fees...like 50 of them..

Universities in the Province of Quebec has had their tuition frozen for quite a while now.

How much are room and board expenses?
Is there any sort of merit aid for students from US?

Info on residence costs and meal plans and fees is all on their web site if you look around a little. There are different costs but I'd say a rule of thumb is $9-10,000 CAD per year for room and board.
Their wegb site also gives estimates of total costs including health insurance, fees, books, immigration fees etc. for an international studnet living on campus. They estimate $24,000-32,000 CAD per year, depending on your program (click on Money Matters)

That sounds about right. A very good friend's daughter is a sophmore at McGill and she is paying about $25K USD for living expenses and tuition/fees for the sciences off campus. You will be off campus by the second year so it is important to look at those costs also. That doesn't include some expensive tastes in furnishing a student apartmen t, and travel home, clothing etc. so I think the total is quite a bit more.

I am a parent of a McGill junior (USA). My son lives off campus in a convenient 1 bedroom apartment and paying about $550 US. That includes heat and electricity.

By American standards, this school is the biggest bargain around -- and it is very, very fine. The catch with an apartment (as opposed to dorm) is you have to pay rent 12 months (or have to sub let). He lived in the dorm freshman year and we spent about $700 US/month, but times just 8 months.

If you live in the dorm, they bill you monthly. Tuition, as was stated, is due 2 times a year. There does not appear to be financial aid for Americans. In the dorm he was in (New Rez, a converted hotel) they required students to buy into the food plan. This plan was generally costly, because many of the kids did not use the full amount on the "debit card."

I think at the other dorms there is no such requirements

Americans have to pay annually about $800 (Canadian) for health insurance, even if they have a US policy. Books can be expensive, just as they are anywhere, but this year my son found cheaper used books.

If anyone h as any specific questions about the program, feel free to PM me. My son ia a math/comuter science major.
