I was just reading another thread about a kid who started a club at his school around “Magic”, the card game. I wondered if it was the same kid (and could see that the OP might object, although I think it would be fine).

What’s the club?

It’s okay as a parent to go to your kid and apologize for being overly negative. It’s also okay to stick with your original reaction.

I once heard a guy who said that all conflict is caused by fear. Fear that our kids won’t achieve. Fear they’ll get hurt. Fear they don’t love us. Whatever. Using I statements helps a lot. (The talking to your kids book (#7) is helpful there for communicating your fears without being accusatory. “I get scared when you don’t come home by curfew.” “I worry you won’t be able to get in the colleges you deserve to get into when your grades don’t match up to your abilities.”

I think it helps to talk about grades in terms of shutting doors. The better they are the more options you have.

I take it you founded the “uncalled for sarcastic response to the nice lady who made a minor error” club.

You made me smile, bovertine ;)

You asked in a very condescending manner.

And she didn’t put anything down. She stated a fact about the school her child attended, nothing about her personal opinion of anything.
I never saw her put anyone down on this website.

I deleted my post because I don’t want to take this OT. Yes,.I took offense to what was said and how it was said. “not at MY kid’s school” and with that, I’m done. Didn’t mean to be condescending. Apologize if it came our like that but people get defensive when they feel like their beliefs are being put down. Imagine if it had been something like a Christian club being told not at MY kid’s school.

Sorry I spelled it wrong. I did look it up, but apparently not enough. I have no problem with …whatever, but I know my kids school would have.Thats all I meant. Sooo not my belief.
I spent a few years trying to convince them it was okay to teach evolution. My D founded the young democrats, and scandalized them with my comments about whats worse than abortion… So…yeah. But my kids wanted to stay there, so there’s that.

And thanks bovrrtine, hope to keep that rep intact.

Maybe the Christian mindreaders club. Because I don’t read any of that into her capitalization. I took that emphasis to mean she was speaking only about her child’s school rather than generalizing.

I make tons of snide comments on here so I expect to be lambasted on occasion. Shrinkrap is vigilantly polite. And a psychiatrist BTW.

Now I"m DONE hijacking the thread. Really.

Thanks for all the heart warming parents and students giving me these very important suggestions, opinions. I also appreciate the private msg which I can’t reply coz I do not have enough post. I wish I came to this board last year, so maybe I will avoid all these mistakes.

Anyway, after read all your comments, I realized (which my hubby already pointed out and I did not agree) that I did not listen, and I talk too much and too fast.
I regret on the club thing–well, it is something about “fire” which I don’t think the school will allow in any case. But you are right that I should let him try and he will be stopped right at the “finding teacher to sponsor” part. I did not know that until now.

I have apologized to my son last night. We resumed talking. And I will read that book “get out of my life” hopefully this weekend. I wish I read this book earlier.

The Fire Arts Club seems quite popular at Franklin Olin College of Engineering (the best little school you’ve never hear of).
I find the whole idea scary… but with training/caution I guess it is a safe “sport”.

flyfar, yet another recommendation for the “Get Out of My Life” book. It’s an easy read, very funny, and you can get it used at amazon.com for less than $4.00 including shipping. Most Barnes & Noble stores have it in stock if you can’t wait a week! Unfortunately it’s not available as an ebook.
