I thought many of you would be as astonished and laugh as hard as I did over the following incident.

I was a guest at a military-themed event this past monday evening. During the evening an adult man proudly informed me that "that young man over there" ...and he pointed him out..."was going to the Naval Academy next year.!" Now this person didn't know I had a Plebe at USNA, he was simply pleased and proud as punch about this young man he has mentored for years in this program.

Later in the event I went up to this young person and asked if he had an LOA from the Academy. He looked blankly at me - ("OK," I said to myself..."THAT'S not what the older man meant..." ) So I quickly changed my question to ask what the status of his application was and he told me he had just sent it in. ("Oh, I see", my inner thoughts were..."this sweet, goodhearted older man is just that, sweet but clueless.")

At the end of the evening I thanked the older man for the event and told him I enjoyed talking with the young person - and informed him that indeed we had a Plebe at USNA ourselves. He then proceeded to excitedly say these words...

"Well, last June *** ( the young man) attended their PRESCHOOL! "

"Excuse me?", I said,"can you please repeat that?" ( Although I heard him clearly I simply couldn't tell if he was pulling my leg, or dead serious.) So in a louder voice he said: "He attended their PRESCHOOL for a WHOLE WEEK!" ( Clearly this wasn't a joke - he used the term intentionally!!!)

I smiled and gently replied...."Er, I think you mean the Naval Academy Summer Seminar Program. It's a great introduction to the Academy, isn't it?"

Poor man, I don't think he really heard me, he simply nodded his head and thanked me for coming.

So one and all, I am here to inform you that anyone who attended or hopes to attend a NASS might wish to know that they really attended Pre-school.....only....er....ummmm...I don't think they served cookies, took naps on little mats and sang "I'm a little teapot"....

Oh, and my husband told me later that the Prep School folk wouldn't much appreciate knowing NAPS could read that way either!!!
