A in a Regular Course or B in an AP Course?

I know that colleges say "Get an A in the AP course" but really, if this isn't possible, which would they rather see?

B in the AP because then they know that you are willing to challenge yourself.

B in AP for sure-but don't like underestimate yourself-you might do well and thrive in a driven class. Plus, having an A in regular just reinforces that you COULD have done AP/honors work, and were too slacker/lazy to do it.

Take the AP

It depends.

If it's the first or second AP course, then take the AP.

If you already have 6 AP courses, I think getting an A in a regular course would be better than a B in the 7th AP. One less AP course would allow time to study for the others.

B in the AP class is weighted like an A in the regular class...but then again most people look at the UW GPA...so yeah it is a dilemma. The best way to avoid this is to spend your summer studying all your APs (if you take more than 4) so that you can get As/5s on all of 'em.

B in ap class 4 sure

What course are you talking about? Do you have an interest in the subject or are you just taking it to fulfill a requirement?

Definitely take the AP.

Definitely AP. Your guidance councellor will fill out of form stating if your course load, compared to students in your school, is "Most Challenging", "Very Challenging", "Somewhat Challenging", etc. Universities judge on how well you have done in comparison to others at your school or in your course, not comparing an B from a challenging Prep school to a A from an easy public school, and saying that the public school did kid did better.

Sorry for this extremely long post...

Thank you everyone for your advice! Since some of you guys are curious and I do need a little more guidance, here is my dilemma:

I am not sure whether to take AP Literature.. the only teacher who teaches it at my school is notorious for not giving out any A's because she grades extremely hard... I have her right now for 11th Grade English Honors and I'm pulling off B's, though she does like me as a student and is a great candidate to be my recommendation writer for apps. If I do not take AP Literature, I will have finished all the AP's offered at my school except APLit for a total of about 10.

This is my next year's prospective schedule:
Regular English (or AP Literature)
AP Calculus BC
AP Economics/Gov't
AP Physics C
AP Japanese
Dance
Leadership
Speech

I'm pretty confident about all the other classes except English.. all these high school years that I've taken honors English, I've only been able to pull off one semester A...
Although, like None said, not taking the AP Literature class would allow me more time for other classes, college apps, and extra curriculars.. I'm just scared about working so hard in English and disappointing myself with another B (not that B's are bad, it's just that I've racked up quite a lot of B's and I can't afford to earn any more.) I am torn, I really do enjoy writing and learning in this teacher's class and she is somewhat expecting me to be in her class next year, what should I do? What do you all think?
I really appreciate your help!!

ideal: b in ap course
reality: a in regular course(especially for uc campuses)

o yah dont take ap english if ur not sure u can get an a

Our AP Lit/Lang teacher is also notorious for not having any A's. I was numero uno in my class in 10th grade, and had to decide whether to chance my unweighted GPA and being valedictorian and take her class, or take the easy way out. I decided to take her class and I've never looked back. She is an amazing teacher, one of the best I've had in high school. It's been extremely difficult, don't get me wrong. A "bad day" in her class will drop your grade 3 points. She challenges me to do better everyday. But, I am a better writer and thinker for it.

Also, I earned my A =). Hopefully, my final grade this year will be an A.

I've learned to take peoples' advice with a grain of salt. I had so many people tell me it would be impossible, but I did it because I concentrated and did my best.

But, even if I end up with a B I'll still be proud of myself and my decision because I decided to challenge myself and not settle for honors (which is ridiculously easy at my school).

In my HS, A in reg course is a GPA of 4.
A in Honors course is 5.
A in AP is 6.
As u can see, B in AP is unanimously prefereable.
Even if u've to decide btw Hon and AP, that's a bit tough, but still, I'd go w/ B in AP rather than A in Hn. They love to see people taking the challenge.

oo i wish my school gave an extra point to AP classes (it counts just like Honors- 5)
i would defintly take AP English- b/c its your senior yr, colleges are going to look at your schedule to see if its challenging enough. If you took honors english 9-11, then there's no reason why you shouldnt do AP.
