A Junior Interested in Barnard

  • Debate team
  • Writing Club/Poetry Slam
  • Vice President of the Gay Straight Alliance
  • National Honors Society
  • World Language Honors Society
(I played Softball and Volleyball in Freshman year and Sophomore year I was in the Guidance Honors Association, but it was kind of a joke…)

I have over 200 volunteer hours so far, and over the summer I went to debate camp. I am also counting on great recommendations because I have teachers who have already offered them to me when I need them. I am going to France for 10 days in April to participate in an exchange program my school has. I am career shadowing a retired screenwriter for an independent project, and I work at the local library as a page.

Tests:
PLAN: 26
PSAT: 187 (perfect score on the writing section!)

I toured Barnard and went to a small session my school had with our admissions officer from there. I am absolutely in love with the school-- the buildings, the faculty, their outlook on education, everything they have in place for women to succeed, etc. I am probably going to apply early decision. I have also been changed by a recent tragedy in my town that I was very close to, and although I am still recovering, I have been doing MANY things for my town, from volunteering to activism to creating programs and organizing funds. I will probably write about this and how I was changed, for the better in the long run, in my essay, and how that has shaped me to become stronger.

How do I look for Barnard? What should I improve? Should I send both tests (SAT and ACT)? If you have anything else, suggestions-wise, that would be great! Thanks!!!

Hipster,

First, enjoy France this spring. What an experience for you! Enjoy every minute of it.
I, nor anyone else outside of the Barnard admissions staff, have any real insights into future application chances. That said, your grades look very good and the quality of your course work looks very challenging.

Work hard on preparing for the standardized tests and your essays. That, along with your course work, is what you have control over. If either the PLAN or the PSAT came easier or was more intuitive, I would focus on their associated test (PLAN/ACT PSAT/SAT).

For what it’s worth, your information reads similar to my D, who was accepted for the fall of 2014 through the early admission process. Keep in mind, though, the only thing that will matter is how your application looks in relation to other applicants for that year and what kind of fit for Barnard you appear to be.

Best of luck,

Cornel85, thank you so much! Although I know it is impossible to say whether I will get in, it was nice to hear that your daughter was similar… Thanks again!
