A letter from UVa... Does everyone get these?

i m international, and i got the email.
sat 2120
sat2 korean800 math1c700 ushistory630
gpa weighted 4.3
been in international school for 2 years
and virtually no ec.

I did.
Instate.
4.0 UW
2200 SAT
Great Recs.

I got the email. Out of state 4.11 GPA and just received a likely letter in the mail today

i got the email…i’m pretty sure that everyone gets it. for those who say they didn’t get it, it probably went into your junk mail or something.

OOS and I didn’t get it

Ugh I’m so confused. It seems like most instate people got it but a lot of OOS people didnt. which could indicate it has something to do with admissions? (since more instate people get in) but rodeobay could be totally right. check your junk mail guys!

i got it, (OOS) and it seems like the other emails from uva, basically telling you to follow their blogs and stuff. i don’t think it’s anything to do with a likely letter… (although i’m not complaining if it is)

My daughter also got the same email from the Dean.
My daughter is an International Student.
Does this fall under “likely letter” or is it an email sent to everyone ?
Whatever it is I must say it is really nice to get such acknowledgement letter.

Admission is more competitive for OOS than IS so that could explain some discrepancies. Also, UVA probably looks at more than GPA and SAT, they find people they want to admit based on that and extracurriculars and essays and teacher recs.

I am an OOS US citizen but at in International School overseas and I got it. No likely letter yet but maybe later this week due to being overseas???

uva is harder to get in for OOS students than IS students???
how come?? that’s interesting.

Anyways, i wish this nice little
virtually-no-importance email would mean sth good =))

UVA admits about 60-something percent of its class in state and the rest are out of state. Because they have to meet these quotas, it is harder to get in OOS because there are more people applying for fewer spots.

Email = email update sent to the entire pool

Likely Letter = formal letter sent via US Mail

Hope that helps!

To Dean J :So the general email means nothing, correct? Does UVA really use a holistic approach to the admissions process? My son is OOS and has only above average stats (28 ACT and 3.6 WA) but is very talented in foreign languages. He is one of only several at a well known private school in North Carolina to take two languages on top of a full load of honors and AP courses and the only one to finish 4 years of honors Chinese. He wants to study international business focusing on the Chinese. He has outstanding ECs and Recs and won a scholarship to China, captain on the varsity baseball team and year round baseball pitcher. What he does not have is the blow away test scores and GPA (because his private school grades ridiculously hard). He is so passionate about learning Chinese and studying abroad – does any of that really get taken into consideration or is it all just a numbers game? He really works so hard and has increased his GPA by alot each year (last semester it was a 4.3+) but the double language weighed him down freshmen and sophomore year. It is discouraging to think one gets penalized for risk taking, but it seems to be all about the stats for most schools…

We are holistic.

Thank you for the quick response. I am new to the site, but have been noticing for weeks now that you are one of the only college reps on line who responds (and might I add very quickly) to questions. I have one more question – my son just got inducted into the NHS at his school - very big honor since it is so difficult to get in at this school which expects a tremendous amount of leadership and service. My son tried to send an email and received a generic reply saying that the office can not accept emails. Is it too late to try and get this information in his file? He is a varsity baseball captain and is at practice until late every night. If it is not too late, how could he best get this information in his file? It is making him crazy that this might be the piece of information that could possibly help.

To what email address did he send his message? We don’t have any stock reply about not taking emails. In fact, we are a paperless office, so we actually prefer emails over updates sent by regular mail.

uvaapplicationinfo or undergradadmission “at” virginia.edu are the addresses that should be used.

Hope that helps!

Dean J - my daughter didn’t receive the email that everyone seems to have gotten and is now concerned email may not be getting to her. Anything she can check? Her email is listed correctly in the SIS. She is waiting with fingers crossed for UVA so I know her nerves are a bit shot at this stage in the game! Thanks so much!

Dean J-I did not get the email either
