A link to some Denison photos

Here is a link to some very RANDOM photos that I've taken of Denison. I'm not a great photographer (well, obviously!) but if anybody is interested here it is:

Weenie,
I think your pictures are great! I have a few online I can post too. I'll try to get them separated out from the family pics sometime over break. It really is a beautiful campus.

Those are great pictures. Thank you.

Thanks for the pictures. My D & I visited last Feb., but we have been to so many schools ... they tend to run together in my feeble old mind! I don't recall whether or not we got to see dorm rooms at Denison. What are they like? The one thing my D really likes is windows --- how is the window situation in the dorm rooms? I know it seems kind of strange; however, one wonderful school we visited had miniscule windows in the rooms & it's a real issue for my D! Also, how is the food?

D will be spending the night sometime in Feb., which will help answer the above questions. Just thought I'd ask, though. Thanks!

Hi Kelsmom,
The freshman dorms vary. They are basically Dorms, if you know what I mean, The windows have all been very adequate in my son's dorms. For freshman dorms, the largest is Shorney (I believe I had a picture of that). IT's considered the FUN dorm. Smith (right across a sidewalk) is newly renovated, but more subdued. My son lived in Smith last year, he had a corner room with two large windows. Some freshmen live in a building on the other quad with upperclassmen (maybe mostly athletes) and some live in the north quad, which used to be frat houses.

We visited a dorm at U Pitt with my second son (not the one at Denison) that had the Smallest windows in the world. It freaked son #2 out.

My son hates the food. He suffers through and cooks a lot of his own stuff in the dorm kitchen. I have heard other kdis say they think the food is fine.

I think for the most part, the dorms are pretty standard, old-style small box rooms. The windows appear to be fairly standard too...nothing special, but every room has at least one....my DD's has two because she's on a corner. There are some different options though, like the Homestead, senior apartments, and several houses that used to be fraternities and are now residences. Some of these seem to be "specialty" types of houses....like the Honors house, one for service learning, etc.. They also have different options like Quiet dorms and/or substance free. All the first-year students are placed in first-year only housing, I think. My DD currently lives in East and she seems to like it.
The food is described as varying from so-so to "not so good". However, I think she's found several things she likes, such as the do-it-yourself stir fry. And she was complaining when she was home over break (she had to go back already, for her sport :-( because she's used to having an entire buffet to choose from...... at home you either eat what's fixed or your on your own <g>!</g>

Thanks for all the info!

Very nice pix of a lovely town and campus.

Terrific photos, Weenie. You have truly caught the architectural grandeur of the campus as well as some of the unique locations in the hamlet of Granville at its entrance. They evoke many fond memories of moments spent with our son there not so long ago. Hopefully the admissions people will take note of your work and express their appreciation to you as well. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the photos, Weenie. Great timing, too: D just got a card from Denison in today's mail, inviting her to a visiting day for juniors in Feb. She looked Denison up in her standard reference "The Insider's Guide to the Colleges" and declared that it sounded perfect. Your pictures make it look beautiful even when there were no leaves on the trees!

Wow thanks everybody. I'm really such a pathetic photographer...and whenever I'm there my son and husband hate it when I lag behind taking pictures. Ha. And it was hard to find pictures without my family in them, although some picts of the messy dorm rooms do make good blackmail material.

Pictures are great and a real contribution to this site and anyone interested in the school.

thanks for the pics - S and I are also planning to visit in Feb!

what would be the best way to arrange an overnight for him with a current student -- admissions office or coach?

Hmmm. I don't know the answer to that. Maybe the coach would be able to pick a kid he'd have more in common with?

I think overnights are tricky at all schools. My son ruled out one school almost completely based on one not-so-great host, and while in the long run it didn't matter, I really believe it is not a good way for a kid to choose (or eliminate) a school - because it is just luck-of-the-draw.

So I think I'd start with the coach, although he may send you to admissions.

Good luck!

Good points, Weenie. My older S had varied overnight experiences at the school he is now attending (and loves), so I agree it's important not to let host compatibility drive the decision. Maybe we should just visit this time, then send him back for an overnight if he remains interested. Thanks for your perspective.

Esquette,
If your S is pretty sure he wants to be involved in a sport, and that will make a big difference in his decision-making (as it did for my DD), he should go through the coach to arrange the visit. The coach will coordinate the visit through the admissions office, but he will stay with a team member (and probably meet many others while there). By staying with another athlete, he can get a good idea of what the team atmosphere is like, how they get along, what the practices involve, etc... The visit will involve all the traditional admissions stuff (campus tour, interview with the admissions rep, meals on campus, etc..) but also important components that have to do with the sport that your typical student host won't know. Hope that helps!
