A list of greivences and loves, from a 2nd year UC Merced Student.

its nice to hear more people speak positively about UCM
thanks and congratulations I<3UCM

Humm, well I </3 UCM. I have many notable accomplishments as well...including a 3.8 GPA and leadership in community service projects. HOWEVER, my accomplishments were done IN SPITE of being at UCM, rather than because I go to UCM. The fact of the matter is, UCLA+UCB+UCSD have muchh more resources and a more solid foundation for students to work off of.

To Premed4life: I have a couple questions if you don't mind.

Would you have attained your leadership role(s) as easily as you have if you would have gone to another UC? Forgive me but I doubt leadership opportunities in other UCs would've popped open so quickly and even if there was an opening, you can bet there would be a lot more people jockeying for that single spot, people that actually care and that are qualified.

Additionally, from what I understand, some professors grade on a curve. Do some of the UCM professors grade on a curve? If yes, read below. If no, do something else.

If you were in a larger class with arguably smarter people as opposed to the majority of the students at UCM, would you still have attained your 3.8? Of course this is all relatively speaking as different professors grade differently and class composition varies greatly but for the sake of the question, let's assume all UC professors teach at the same caliber and grade on the same curve and the class composition is as follows: 1/3 Below B, 1/3 at B, 1/3 Above B. I am not doubting your intelligence in any way whatsoever, rather arguing that the current class composition at UCM could have been a factor in your GPA, as it can be a factor in all students' GPAs.

If you would answer "no" to either question (except the second one about UCM professors curving), then one can argue that your accomplishments can be attributed to being at UCM rather than "in spite" although that's what most of us would like feel anyway.

Those are very legit' questions. I have a final in T-minus 20 mins, so ill answer it later tonight or tomorrow =]] It deserves a full response.

Looking forward to your response Premed4life.

A mixed blessing. From what I have come to understand from various student's perspectives, UCM is exactly that, a mixed blessing.

No competition can be a double-edged sword. You can excel and be the top of your class but what class at that?

We are lucky UC transfers are allowed. :]

LOLOL, ok sorry for the wait finals >>>>CC ;)

Ok, to be completely honest if I was in your position I would wonder the exact same thing, I mean it no doubt has to be peturbing reading such negative things about the college your about to shell out 20 G's to go to. So there must be something good about that place, and the two things you stated seem to be the most logical things that could be postive about UCM.

Sadly, here is why there not.
UCM is not Berkeley, and NONE of the classes I had were based on a curve, in a matter of fact I HIGHLY doubt any of the courses at UCM are based on a curve. The reason is, most kids fail there classes (THIS IS A FACT, last semester 55+% of the enrolled students were failing 1 or more courses). Because of this, the prof cant "curve" the class, because he cant pass people onto the next level of the subject, when there just going to fail that as well. Also, none of these prof's have tenure, and they want to keep there job;s, so there not going to tell the administration they curve and pass students in classes, when they have not learned the material. In my biology class, 7/130 people got A's, 70+ people recieved a D or an F. It doesnt help whatsoever having dip-$hits as class mates. And to excacerbate the situation, these classes are pretty much graded only a littttle easier than courses at UCLA or UCSD are.

Although leadership roles have more competition at UCLA and UCB, the fact is there are many more roles to fill at those colleges. I dont think I will have any problem whatsoever getting into a Lab or helping in the community in Los Angelos...i mean the city and area has millions of people, as opposed to UCM whose city tips the scales at 30k. If anything, I would argue that it will become increasingly difficult, and harder at UCM to obtain leadership positions, due to the fact that there is increasing demand (Fall 2008' class is more than 100% of the total UCM student body) aand limited supply of roles at UCM to fill. But, this arguement is flawed, because if your proactive enough anything can happen...sadly few people reaaaaallly want to put themselves out there and make things happen

Thanks for your reply. You answered my questions nicely.

I can especially see why professors cannot curve now. Lol. I wonder if this is an advantage or disadvantage...well, at least we're against the material and not each other right? ;]

True, if you're driven anything can happen. I didn't think about it then but since UCLA and UCB are bigger institutions, they would need more students to fill in leadership roles as more and more people leave with each quarter (or semester if you're at UCB).

Thanks again. :]

All the Bobcats psyched about school starting in like a month? =]

school starts august 22 RIGHT?

LOL I'm ready!

School starts at the 21st right? UC Merced - Office of the Registrar - Calendars and Deadlines

I am excited! I am going to the orientation on the LAST DAY because I procrastinated LOL What should I take? Is it just 1 day?

How many of you guys wanna meet up somewhere on the first day so we can actually make some friends first day lol

I'm pumped and ready, haha
and i think school starts on the 27th since move-in isn't until the 22nd right?

Wait wait wait.
I read MOST of the posts (not going to lie, skimmed through it a lot)
For someone like me, with a complete computer addiction, scared as hell of Los Angeles, therefore afraid to go outside, and has nothing to do ONCE going outside.. I'm not sure if UCM's lack of social life would bother me much.

I mean.. this is just assuming I can stay online for 10 hours at a time.

My same thoughts exactly Mengna. Most of my friends and I play online computer games and have vowed to keep in touch with each other through such means...in moderation of course. :]

Hay! I'm curious; did anyone buy the mac pro from UCM? Is it actually worth it?

This thread really made me want to stay away from UCM. o_o

Yay me for going to UCLA.

Yay for spam!

I enjoy cooking spam almost as much as I love reading it.

YUM!

I can see I'm not needed here... :(

Seeing as you need be educated on the etiquette of online forums (or rather just plain common sense), I'll take it upon myself to show you what's not needed here so the next time you find yourself in a similar situation, you won't make the same mistake. I made a list below for your sake. I'm pretty sure UCLA admits can comprehend the concept of a list.

Spam is not needed here.

Demeaning attitudes are not needed here.

Braggarts are not needed here.

If you really want to flaunt about going to UCLA / have a desire to share your admittance with the world, go post that in the Harvard, Yale, or Princeton threads. What? Mommy and Daddy didn't praise you enough and buy you that brand new convertible so you have to come to the UCM thread and post your achievement? Get real. A person as smart as you (I'm assuming you're smart since you got into UCLA) should have known what your actions carry. If you carry this attitude into the real world, you will **** people off and get no where in life.

It's really not appreciated when it's clearly obvious someone is seeking attention by blatantly declaring he or she is better than another group of people.

Oh, that wasn't you're intention you say? Then why post? If you're not trying to show off then why are you posting useless information in this thread out of all the threads out there?

We're not on the playground anymore. I don't care if you have a Charizard pokemon card. I like my Pikachu just fine.

P.S. Don't take this as a personal attack. That's not my intention at all. I merely saw a fellow poster in need of some refinement. Remember, this is for your own betterment. :]

If you want to contribute, post something meaningful next time.

Thanks and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
