My name is Helen and I am a senior at a high school just outside of Boston, MA. As I narrow down my list of schools, I am trying to judge my chances to get into the schools I am applying to. I have an unusual application, so I wanted to see what you guys thought my chances were of getting into these schools (Boston College, UVA, UNC, Tufts, NYU, UPenn, William and Mary, UMass, Northeastern, GWU, etc). I have very good extracurriculars, and I am a very strong writer, but my GPA is a little bit below average for these schools.
GPA:
4.35/5 (B+/A- average, more B+’s than A-‘s though, equivalent to about a 3.5/4)
My GPA improved significantly each year (freshman year: 4.1, sophomore: 4.3, junior: 4.6, senior: 4.9)
Hi–I think that this is a “chance me” question more than a community college question. I’m flagging your post so that the moderator can move it to the right category.
That being said, I think that you have a good chance at many of these schools. The question I would ask is: Can you afford them? NYU and GW have notoriously terrible FA. UVA, UNC, and William and Mary are a public schools and you would be paying a high price to attend.
These schools also have pretty different personalities. I’m wondering why this list?
What is “unusual” about your application? Knowing those things might help the forum help you.
Also – maybe don’t list your full name on a public forum. As a parent that gives me the hives.
I’m a little confused by your being a senior but still “narrowing down” the schools list and retaking SAT - application deadlines for most of those colleges have passed already? Other than that, there’s not much to add - as you say your stats are below average for those schools (at least the ones I’ve researched, which does not include Umass and W&M) so you’d need to hope your ECs, essay, letters of rec have something to lift you. The improving gpa trend will help. Bear in mind also some of the publics you have there (UNC, UVA for example) are much harder for out of state students to gain admittance.
Do you have more match and safety schools that you haven’t listed here?
