hi,
I am an international student and my parents can't afford it to fly with me to the US to send me off to College...I will have to get to SMith Campus without a car...and I can only bring two suitecases....Is there a way to buy bigger things like laundry baskets somewhere near campus without having to use a car?
Even though I already spend more than a year away from home it is a little bit scary to think about how to handle this situation(especially after reading the long lists of things I should bring....).
What are students from the West Coast doing? How do you transport your stuff to the College? Are your parents coming with you?
I just can't imagine how this "arriving at the college" is happening....

There are stores like Walmart, Target, and an entire mall that can be easily accessible by the PVTA bus (free during the school year). I'm assuming that you'll be attending ISP (International Student Preorientation) and on the day between that and the regular orientation Smith has, in the past, provided another bus to the mall. Sometimes students with cars drive to the mall and take passengers as well. There are also stores downtown.

When you get to Smith there will be lots of people here to help you out (ISP after all will be filled with students just like you. Of course you'll get help!). My roommate first year flew from Zimbabwe and only brought one suitcase, and she was fine.

hi,

Bring some American dollars (you can bring up to 1k into the country) so youll have some cash (snacks, Starbucks :) etc while you wait for your bank account to become active. If you have a credit card that will be useful. Amex and Visa will give you a very favorable exchange rate.

My daughter packed up a box of the larger stuff and sent it by postal service. There was even a way for her to have it delivered right to her house. I think they tell you about that stuff in the letters explaining the arrival procedures. It worked out well for her.

Great advice, Borgin. I'm sure usjo was comforted after reading your post :) Rest assured usjo, that there will be others in the same situation as you. Your fear is totally understandable however, but Smithies have a way of coming through for each other!

Thanks so much....I was really freaking out...it's so wired because I am so used to living away from home for a long time...When I was 15 I was 6 months at a High School in Utah and right now I am already for 8 months in California.....but still...now that getting into Smith is real...and affordable....
But know I feel better again...Everything will turn out alright...and we'll all have wonderful years!

LOL- I thought you were coming from overseas. I guess you can ignore the American dollar suggestion.

Congratulations on your acceptance.

Thanks,
I go back to Austria in July....I could only afford the year in California because I was working as an au pair and the hostfamily paid everything...so I'll come from overseas, but I already have an american account:-)
