So I've had a couple interviews with schools that I'm applying to, and I've noticed that on the print out (provided to the interviewer by the school with information of me) my ethnicity is listed as simply "Asian."

The thing is I'm only half Asian. My other half is Caucasian. On the Common App, I know I checked the box Asian and White. By labeling me as Asian, they are essentially compromising my identity. My ethnicity isn't just Asian. With this in mind my question is, can colleges do that? Can they ignore the other half of my heritage? What if I was only 1/25 Asian but I still marked Asian on the Common App. I just found this unsettling, and I also found it an insult to my mom, my grandpa, grandma, and simply put the whole other side of my family. (Not to mention it places me in a much more competitive applicant pool.) It's just... a little disturbing. Thoughts? I didn't even know they could do that.

Have ALL schools written this? It’s not like they all use the same form, right? Not every school even writes out a summary. Is it possible you didn’t check the right box on your app?

If you saw this on one school’s summary page, are you sure you saw the complete page? If it was clearly misleading, it might be appropriate to send the school and email, but I’m thinking (hoping) it was just one school and if that’s true, move on. Someone made a mistake.

To be honest, I guess I kind of exaggerated in my OP. The reason being, I was caught in the heat of the moment. I have only seen one printout sheet for one school, and the sheet clearly stated my ethnicity as only Asian. (Mind you, it is one of my top choice schools and very prestigious.) I double-checked my CommonApp and both ethnicities are checked.

— You think it was a mistake? How would I even explain my awareness that they consider me as only Asian… I wasn’t even supposed to see the sheet it was just lying open on the table
