A little early, but chances?

Hey everybody,

I’m currently in the second half of my junior year so naturally I’m getting those worrisome feelings about my chances of acceptance into Boston College. Having grown up in the Boston area (now living in FL), I’ve always aspired to be an Eagle. Here’s some of my creds. as of the end of 1st semester junior year :

Courses -
IB Mathematical Studies SL (Plan on taking Honors Calculus next year)
IB Information Technology HL (2 yr class)
IB/AP English III HL (IB/AP English IV next year)
IB/AP US History
IB Biology SL (wasn’t planning on taking any science next year, bad idea?)
IB Spanish III HL
IB Economics SL (I’m planning on studying finance/marketing after high school)
Financial Planning

GPA -
UW: 3.74
Wtd: 4.50

SAT (best scores over two test dates) -
CR - 630
Math - 710
Writing - 680
(2020)

^ I’ll be taking the May SAT, hoping for another 60 points between math and reading just to hit that 1400 mark. Taking 2 SAT subject tests (Spanish and Math) in June and October, respectively.

Extra Curricular -
Varsity Hockey (4 years)
Varsity Track and Field (2 years)
Phi Delta Y - Youth In Government (2 years)
Future Business Leaders of America (qualified for state competitions freshman year, club was discontinued because of a lack of a sponsor after my first year)
Academy of Finance (4 years)
Spanish Club (2 years)

^ I was afraid it wouldn’t look good that I’ve really only been committed to two activities throughout my entire high school career, but I really only started getting into other things this year.

I’ve done 50 out of the 75 required service hours for IB. I, along with a friend of my dad’s trained unfit (often obese) youths in speed and agility, primarily to benefit their health. There’s more service to come as I need another 25 hours.

I’d really appreciate anyone’s two cents. I’m sure it can get overwhelming reading through these long-winded posts and either encouraging or shutting down someone’s hopes. I know BC is a reach for me but if you don’t apply you can’t get in so I figure I’ll give it a shot.

Thanks,
Brian

I should probably add a few more details:

Gender - Male
Ethnicity - White
High School - Highly Competitive International Baccalaureate School (ranked 6th best public high school in the nation, 3rd highest IB diploma % in the world)
State - Southern Florida

It sounds like you have a good chance! Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll also mention (although I don't know if it has much of a weight on my chances) that between my academic and athletic dedication I have also kept a part time job throughout high school. Additionally, I worked as an intern recording land deeds for a mortgage company my freshman year and this year I am working as an intern as an assistant asset manager for a financial firm.

I think you have a good chance. Just keep working hard throughout the remainder of junior year (which is the worst year ever--so don't get down on yourself if you get stressed). Good luck in the rest of high school, Brian! I hope to see you at BC.

Thanks DisneyLover.
Would you recommend I don't even include the extra currics. that I haven't been involved with all throughout high school? I feel like they'd get the hint that I'm just trying to join clubs instead of actually participate just to add some cushioning to my resume. I mean, I love being a part of Youth in Government and running Track, but I realized a little too late that they were two things I wanted to do in high school.

You have an AWESOME shot, better then me and I find out in a few weeks. But don't get too confident. 2020 is truly great and you're smart for it - but doesn't mean you stop working here. Work to improve your scores because you still have so much time. Don't start slacking now - you have second semester of senior year to do all that. Study more for the SATs because that's the only thing you have control over essentially now - you want to be above average and not just mean, which you probably are now.

I suggest getting the blue book and the online course only becuase they have answers/explanations in the online course and other tests. That's what I did and raised my score 200 points betweee one test date and the next. It's good to take a class, but this is cheaper and better. Work! Don't start cruising.

I only say this because you want to increase your chances while you still can. I can't do anything now and I wish I could take my SATs again.

Where do you go to school in FL Wallstkid? We live north of West Palm Beach. My daughter applied to BC but got accepted to UF so she probably will be going there. I think you have a good chance at BC. We lived in NH from 2002-2005 and she would also love to go to BC but waiting to here back from them.

Directly across in Fort Myers. I'll realistically end up at UF because of Bright Futures and all, but I'd really like to see my options first and at least apply to places like BC.

Just like BC they only admitted 9,000 students to University of Florida and 30,000 applied for it so I am happy she got into UF. She is waiting to hear from BC but she will have the bright futures scholarship and we did the pre paid Florida College for her so I think she will be going to UF.

Brian, I wish you good luck...You have great stats,,,and being male is a plus! So is your FL address vs a New England one!! Keep up your grades, add a quality role model type pursuit to your list...not quantity..

My D1 was deferred, waitlisted, denied from BC in '06, attended Conn Coll, tried to transfer to BC, was waitlisted, wrote a note saying she was no longer interested in BC..And she got accepted as a sophomore transfer...met a ton of people, spent 7 months in Paris studying & is now a 2nd semester junior, loving it...living off campus with 4 women!!! And has a fantastic GPA..

I really think BC looks at those SAT/AP/SAT II scores, they have no choice due to numbers of applicants..Her grandfather was a BC grad, she had many letters added to her app..I don't think it helped!!

Alls well that ends well..& the sports are fun!

ps Play up your obese kids service , BC is rooted in community service..Make sure BC knows you did this because you were sincerely interested in the kids, not just for you to fulfill your hours!

Get up your CR!

Thanks for the input Nicole, I'll definitely have to remember to talk a great deal about that community service.
