So I'm a junior in High school right now and I want to apply to Stanford early action or through the match program if I'm a Questbridge finalist. My GPA after first semester of junior year is a 3.98 unweighted. I have no idea what it is weighted because my school doesn't do that. I go to a highly competitive small public school in the West. I have good ECs and my sat is at 2000 right now but I'm taking it a second time and aiming for a 2200+ since thats what I'm getting on the practice tests. Im also a URM ( African-American) with an annual income of less than 30,000.

My high school courses look like this:

Freshman year:
Regular courses with the exception of biology and geometry and French 2 which are sophomore courses.

Sophomore year:
Ap Economy: W--- study hall, and then switched to Income and Money Managment second semester and got an A+
Adv. Algebra: A/A+
Soph. English: A+/A+
Physics: A/A+
Honors Chemistry: A/A+
History: A+/A+
French 3: A+/A+
Aerobics: A/ journalism: A

Junior Year:
Newspaper: A.--- I'm the editor in chief
Pre-Calculus: A+
AP USH: A
AP Chemistry: A
Junior English: A
AP Statistics: A+
French 4: A+
Psychology: A+ <-- it's regular but I plan on taking the AP exam

The reason my freshman and sophomore classes are so weak on APs is because my school doesn't allow freshmans and sophomores to take them until Junior & Senior year. I had to get special permission to take AP Econ and ended up withdrawing during my first semester of sophomore year because I hated the subject, the class, and it took up a lot of time which is valuable to someone who as an income as low as mine.

I guess what I really want to know is If I'm still competitive. How detrimental was dropping ap economy to my application. Should i take the class I dropped again senior year since I was doing really well in it anyway ( I had a 95% when I dropped). Should I not bother with Stanford and apply to other schools instead. Even though Stanford is my dream.

I forgot to mention that my only B was a B+ in biology during the first semester of my freshman year. I’ve had straight As since then.

I also want to be premed in college.

I think you would be a strong canidate for Stanford REA

Even with the W? I mean wouldn’t that affect my chances greatly. The only reason i ask is because I’m also considering other schools that aren’t restrictive with early action so I Stanford is out of my league, dream school aside, would it be more beneficial for me to apply to them? Also for anyone who’s aware or been trough the questbridge match process, do I have a better shot at getting in thru questbridge match or EA.

I don’t think dropping a class will hurt you at all. You have a strong course load.
I’d probably go the questbridge route, but this is something your college counselor might be able to help you out with.
If Stanford is really your dream school, give it a shot. Don’t shortchange yourself by not even trying. I agree that you have a very good chance of acceptance with your stats, but make sure your essays sparkle and get great recommendations. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply! Did you do the QB match process too? And also do you think it would be a beneficial for me to retake AP Econ (the class I dropped) again next year? I feel like I’d do good in it even if I’m not a fan of the course and a few of my sister thinks I should because it might show colleges that I can handle AP classes.

Bumpty bump bump…is anyone out there

I think you would have one terrific chance with your stats, especially if you can raise your SAT. Be sure to check about the SAT subject tests that might be required at the schools you’re interested in. Generally, the more competitive the university is, the more likely it is that you’ll need to take those tests too. Some let you substitute the ACT test, but you’ll need to check them all out for yourself.

In fact, if you haven’t taken the ACT, you might want to try it. Lots of students do better on one (either SAT or ACT) than they do on the other one, so you may end up scoring higher on the ACT. Good luck wherever you go!

I think you need to either explain in a supplemental essay or have your counselor bring it up in the letter of rec why you got the W. Ws are usually given because a student dropped out because they’re failing. Do not drop another class after your schools drop deadline, and if someone advised you to withdraw, don’t listen to them again!

Other than that, your grades are stellar. Stanford isn’t going to judge you based on lack of APs sophomore year. And as another poster said, do try the ACT. There’s no real harm in it.
