A little problem here.. help needed please.

Actually, I think it's a really big problem, but I will do my best to stay objective. Yesterday I was checking on my common application personal statement for international transfer students, (the one I already submitted to 3 of my favorite colleges). And I am copying the essay into a text editing document and all I see is red lines. So, the fact that I spell-checked my essay was just in my mind. I don't know how exactly this happened, but it doesn't matter because I will look careless and stupid to say the least. I have SEVEN mistakes (with repetitive mistakes counted) on my essay? and it's just 1000 characters. I mean.. could this ever ever get worse? So of course I freaked out and thought of not continuing my application because, who makes seven spelling mistakes on their personal statement? I am thinking I am definitely ruined. So then someone tells me that my essay emits sincerity and that I should not give up, which is great, but I want to be reasonable. So, would someone be kind enough to read my essay and let me know how bad it really looks? And whether you think I should move forward with my application? Thank you.

Your choices are to go forward with the process or quit. That you have thrown in a factor that can lower your chances does not mean you are at absolute zero, which you would be if you withdrew. There is famous situation on this board about the “clam fart”, yes, you read it right, that somehow accidently slipped into an essay and the writer was still accepted. It’s up to you.

well…I don’t know what schools you are applying to or what your first language is, but as an international student, (if English is not your first language) there is still hope. If your statement was sincere and well written, a few spelling errors may be overlooked. Things happen, even with spell check. If everything else looks great, spelling errors while careless, are not the end of the world. There many VERY INTELLIGENT people out there who are not the best spellers who have terrible hand writing. (I know…I am married to one)

@cptofthehouse I know it isn’t right to give up. I guess I’ll do my best and put my regrets aside (for now). Thank you.

@marybee333 I am applying to UMASS Amherst, UMASS Lowell and IIT. I am from Egypt, but I scored 106 on the toefl, which should tell them I am not an idiot who doesn’t know how to spell. So, I am not sure how they’ll look at it. But thank you so much for your advise.
