ok, is it possible to double major across different schools? for example, i'm really interested in claremont mckenna's international relations program but i'm also thinking of doing engineering and harvey mudd seems perfect. can a student double major in fields that are in different schools?

thanks a lot!

you probably ENROLL in one of the colleges,
and declare both majors under them
and then you can take classes at either (or any) of the ones you want to.

but i don't know if you can take an entire major's worth of classes at another college.

maybe like, all of IR and some eng. @ CM
and some eng. classes at harvey mudd

When we visited CMC they said that if they didn't offer a major (such as music or engineering) that you could go complete that Harvey Mudd and still major in Engineering/Int'l Relations. Then, your diploma says that you got a double major in engineering/intl relations from CMC.

Yes, I am fairly sure that at CMC, you can double-major across different schools (degree rules are slightly different at each school, but I think this one's fine). However, make sure you look further into engineering as I'm actually not positive that you could do this through HMC (CMC does offer a 3/2 program with HMC as an option for the '2'). And even if you could do it in theory, I'm not at all sure that you could do it in practice. The Mudd engineering major is typically understood to be the most taxing major across the consortium (in terms of course requirements and time commitment, especially). Part of me feels like it's allowed and feels like I've heard of off-campus HMC engineering majors, but part of me thinks I'm dreaming and can't imagine trying to do stuff like clinic, especially on top of another major (and thesis).

So...you should be able to cross-major on different campuses, but I'm not sure how workable your actual combination would be (at least in 4 years). I recall a CMC student telling me that he was an engineering minor, but I don't believe that CMC actually allows minors, so maybe I misunderstood and he was doing what you're talking about...or maybe I'm misremembering completely (useful, I know). Definitely worth an email to admissions, who should be able to direct you to a valid source!

ETA: The CMC website is refusing to be particularly helpful. I found 3-2 programs in both Management Engineering and Economics-Engineering (the latter w/HMC), but none in any other branch. I feel like you should still have options (maybe that option is a regular off-campus, 4 year engineering major through Mudd). Interestingly, the website notes that E-E students are expected to take 5 or more courses every semester (I assume this is for all 5 years, since Mudd students tend to do this anyway). This definitely doesn't seem encouraging, but all I'm doing now is speculating. Claremont is a great place for those with diverse interests, so I hope things work out. Good luck :)

I heard somewhere that unless you got to Harvey Mudd they wont let you take that major (engineering) there since its their pride and joy.

Since that basically runs counter to the entire theory behind the consortium, I have to assume that if off-campus students aren't allowed to complete engineering as a 'regular' (vs. 3-2) major, it's for slightly more practical reasons :p
