<p>Musical theater should lend itself well to the pain involved in waiting, getting your hopes up, getting rejected, recovering with new inspiration, etc...
After watching so much MT with my daughter, I have learned to think this way when times are dark, that there is a song in the wings, about to waft you away into the nugget of your feelings, the pain, and the joy....
So, I thought all of you would be good at suggesting songs for the new musical, "Waiting" (soon playing at a theater near you!)
I had my daughter last night singing , Notice me, (Horton) {fill in the blank with your favorite choice du jour}. It made her laugh!</p>
<p>"What I Did For Love," of course! :)</p>
<p>Also, "Waitin' for the Light to Shine" from BIG RIVER...</p>
<p>"Could You Use Me" from CRAZY FOR YOU...</p>
<p>Chime in, everyone - there are many others! :) :) :)</p>
<p>(And GREAT idea, Tashmu!)</p>

<p>"Follow your Heart" (Urinetown)</p>
<p>"Climb Every Mountain" (Sound of Music)</p>
<p>"The Impossible Dream" (Man of La Mancha)</p>
<p>"Something's Coming" (West Side Story)</p>
<p>and for the finale:
"How did we come to this?" (The Wild Party)</p>
<p>"Something's Coming" from West Side Story</p>
<p>"Belle" from Beauty & the Beast ("I want adventure in the great wide somewhere/I want it more than I can tell!")</p>

<p>Anything at all from the Threepenny Opera should do.</p>
<p>"You're The One That I Want" (Grease)</p>
<p>Here's one worth posting the lyrics for: "Our Time" from Sondheim's MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG:</p>
<p>Something is stirring,
Shifting ground …
It's just begun.
Edges are blurring
All around,
And yesterday is done. </p>
<p>Feel the flow,
Hear what's happening:
We're what's happening.
Don't you know?
We're the movers and we're the shapers.
We're the names in tomorrow's papers.
Up to us, man, to show 'em … </p>
<p>It's our time, breathe it in:
Worlds to change and worlds to win.
Our turn coming through,
Me and you, man,
Me and you! </p>
<p>Feel how it quivers,
On the brink … </p>
<p>CHARLEY
What? </p>
<p>FRANK
Everything!
Gives you the shivers,
Makes you think
There's so much stuff to sing! </p>
<p>And you and me,
We'll be singing it like the birds,
Me with music and you the words,
Tell 'em things they don't know! </p>
<p>BOTH
Up to us, pal, to show 'em … </p>
<p>It's our time, breathe it in:
Worlds to change and worlds to win.
Our turn, we're what's new,
Me and you, pal,
Me and you! </p>
<p>Feel the flow,
Hear what's happening:
We're what's happening!
Long ago
All we had was that funny feeling,
Saying someday we'd send 'em reeling,
Now it looks like we can! … </p>
<p>CHARLEY
Someday just began … </p>
<p>BOTH
It's our heads on the block.
Give us room and start the clock.
Our time coming through,
Me and you, pal,
Me and you!
Me and you! </p>
<p>COMPANY
Something is stirring,
Shifting ground …
It's just begun.
Edges are blurring
All around,
And yesterday is done. </p>
<p>Feel the flow,
Hear what's happening:
We're what's happening.
Don't you know?
We're the movers and we're the shapers.
We're the names in tomorrow's papers.
Up to us now to show 'em … </p>
<p>It's our time, breathe it in:
Worlds to change and worlds to win.
Our turn coming through,
Me and you, pal,
Me and you! </p>
<p>FRANK, CHARLEY, MARY
Years from now,
We'll remember and we'll come back,
Buy the rooftop and hang a plaque:
This is where we began,
Being what we can. </p>
<p>ALL
It's our heads on the block,
Give us room and start the clock.
Our dreams coming true,
Me and you, pal,
Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!</p>

"I Want to Be With You" (Golden Boy), "But Not for Me" (Crazy for You),
"We Can Make It" (World Goes 'Round) to name a few more......now for the best...............
"LOSING MY MIND" (Sondheim) ;-)</p>
<p>Coach C,</p>
<p>I love Sondheim's "Our Time". It was the 1st song that popped into my head when I started reading this thread. My D and 2 of her classmates performed it for their H.S. senior recital (and I fought back tears while listening). The melody is beautiful and the lyrics really hit home!</p>
<p>Okay. okay! I think we have our song list. How's about a cast? Do I hear Liza, singing "Maybe this time", or maybe a lesser known , er, um, student?</p>
<p>I must say that the song, Our Time, holds a very special meaning for my D and several of her theater pals. At her theater camp (Stagedoor Manor), there is a select cabaret troupe that performs at resort hotel nightclubs. The name of the cabaret is "Our Time" Cabaret. This show's finale is the song, Our Time, from Merrily We Roll Along (one of my D's favorite musicals and one that her camp has also put on). That final verse is altered a little bit in their version to:</p>
<p>Years from now,
We'll remember and we'll come back,
To this theater; and hang a plaque:
This is where we began,
Being what we can. </p>
<p>The song ends on the last "Me and You..." with each cast member showing an 8 x 10 "headshot" of themselves as a tot, in front of themselves sort of like in A Chorus Line. Then the tears flow as the Our Time Cabaret is also put on as the last performance of each session at midnight for the entire camp and parents. My daughter has been in 15 casts of that cabaret and so the song, Our Time, has seen many a tear and special moment. In fact, I recall on one college application that had a very brief short answer question about your most recent summer vacation, and she wrote about her previous seven summers at Stagedoor, the final line of the short essay even ended with: "The weight of Stagedoor in my life is embodied in these words of Sondheim, traditionally sung in the closing refrain of my beloved Our Time Cabaret, "This is where we began, being what we can." So, your post makes me wax nostalgic. :D</p>
<p>By the way, two Stagedoor alum, one who has posted here, will be in the upcoming Brown University production of Merrily We Roll Along, and my older D is working on sets for that show, I believe.</p>
<p>Our time is very beautiful and meaningful...i was in merrily last yr...</p>
<p>soozie's list is very comprehensive and some choices are so hilarious!! thanks for that!!
in particular, i feel "agony" from into the woods is very appropriate</p>
<p>how about "doors" from closer than ever....
"doors that are openings, doors that close"
"whats on the other side, yes what? something i want and haven't got
over the threshold here's my shot, will i go in there, i will not"</p>
<p>and perhaps "one day more" from les mis
b/c its seems like we might just have to wait one more day for a letter</p>
<p>also, i think "you can't stop the beat"
because even if u get rejected...your love/passion for theatre won't stop, you know?</p>
<p>a few from the color purple
"I'm Here"
"Our Prayer"</p>
<p>and a good one for parents
"the hardest part of love" from childre of eden</p>
<p>"the hardest part of love...is the letting go"</p>
<p>i can think of more, I'll bet!!!!</p>
<p>This is fun, lol... As far as titles go:</p>
<p>Titles:
“Every Goodbye is Hello” John & Jen
“I Ought to Cry" Little By Little
"Fantasies Come True" Avenue Q
"I Believe" Spring Awakening</p>
<p>Lyrics:
"Blue Skies" White Christmas (after an acceptance)
I was blue, just as blue as I could be.
Every day was a cloudy day for me.
Then good luck came a knockin' at my door.</p>
<p>For all the D's "I Am the Greatest Star" from Funny Girl</p>
