A little surprised

lately i've been considering EE as a major, but one thing that's been a semi-detractor is its renowned difficulty - mainly annoyed by the gpa hit/curving. anyways, was browsing the department's website and stumbled upon this: 2010-11 Undergraduate Student Awards . under eecs scholars there a total of 25 senior-standing ee's with a 3.9+. last year there were 94 graduating ee's, and assuming the class size hasn't changed dramatically, isn't it a bit surprising that nearly a quarter of the class has above a 3.9; feel like i'm missing something here, just not sure what.

First, you can have senior standing for more than one year. I had senior standing for about 2.5 years or so. As a result, the list is a bit smaller than what it really looks like. (You can compare with previous classes and see some overlaps…)

Second, this one looks like a very strong class. Go back one year, and there’s just 11.

Third, the people who take the worst of the GPA hit/curving never end up graduating as an EE. So they’re filtered out somewhere earlier in the process, and don’t show up in the statistics at all.
