A&M or SMU

SMU is giving me a full ride basically (not including the living cost) but I haven't heard from A&M...leaving the money factor aside, which one should I choose? I am sooo confused

First off, A full ride includes the cost of living.
If SMU is offering you 100% tuition, fees, & books - for 4 years? - that would be hard to pass up.
What is your scholarship for? What is your major?
SMU - not a bad school, a prestigious private university - you can meet some good contacts there.
Of course A&M’s a better school… but that would be very hard to pass up.

cats123, I’m not sure If I or anyone on this board can or should tell you what decision you should make. Choosing which school you attend is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. Talk to your family and sleep on it. You never know, you might get scholarships or a scholorship from TAMU. Don’t stress out about this situation you are in a position that most people would love to be in. Enjoy it!

cats - If your choice of major doesn’t tip the scales in terms of the better program - my advice to you would be to go and spend a weekend at each place and see where you fit better. Both are good school, but SMU and A&M are EXTREMELY different environments, and you should be able to tell where you want to spend the next 4 years.

Congratulations on having to MAKE this difficult choice! Can I ask how you received the ‘full ride’?

First of all, the Aggies suck. HOOK 'EM HORNS.

Go to SMU, especially if you want to settle in Dallas, or anywhere in Texas. The connections you can make at SMU will really help with your future career plans. Plus, with a full-ride from SMU, it’s hard to pass-up. Also, are you a Texas resident? Because if you’re not, tuition at A&M is most likely going to be pretty expensive. SMU seems like the clear choice between the two.

gooo mustangs

Let the flaming begin.

“Go to SMU, especially if you want to settle in Dallas, or anywhere in Texas” - sja1202

Look, SMU is a great school but, are you serious? Sja1202 have you ever heard of the Aggie Network? Texas A&M has one of the biggest and most active alumni groups in the country, try 250,000!

“The connections you can make at SMU will really help with your future career plans” - sja1202

Once again, Aggie network. But, I guess I can’t expect too much from a sip or stang or whatever you are!

cats123, go where your heart is. I got tons of scholarships where I am now but its just not where I want to be. Visit the campuses, seek the advice of those you love and take a leap of faith.

what major? do you have plans for law school? med school?

First of all thank you all for your inputs…you guys seem really nice =]
klparker312: I guess maybe I shouldn’t say a full ride then because the tution, books, etc are covered. If I were to live in a dorm, I would have to pay money for room+board out of the pocket. I am from Dallas so I have an option of living at home, which is not really a good option lol
AllThisIsNewToMe: scholarships + FA…they seem to be pretty generous lol

I am unsure about my major, but I am def leaning towards the sciences. Maybe perhaps a predental route. How are the sciences at A&M???

SMU is a REALLY pretty campus. and with a full ride? you can’t beat that. and dallas is a great city, I am actually thinking about living there someday.

Both colleges have great academics. And of course remember a rule of thumb: it’s not where you go to college, it’s where you end up.

I’d take a full ride to SMU over that nasty ass school in Austin. Fire up the grill for bevoburgers.

SMU

A&M is a great school, but I think SMU has more prestige, a prettier campus, more personalized education and a great networking system. You are one student of 20 or 30 in a classroom at SMU, at A&M you are one of hundreds.

While according to US News, A&M ranks a bit higher (by a few spots), I bet you SMU will pass A&M in the next few years. SMU is raising the bar, and I think when you say you go to SMU, people respond much differently than when you say you go to A&M. SMU gets people’s attention because its smaller, private and has more prestige.

Go stangs.

SMU doesnt hold the same prestige if you go off to work in the west or east coasts…BUT in the bible belt…SMU beats all…

Apparently it holds some, because Cali and Florida make up A LOT of the student body at SMU.

50% are out of state (according to the Fall incoming class), and most of the people I meet are from California, and Florida. Mostly Cali though.

A&M has a much larger network, and is a more prestigious school. I live about 7 miles away from SMU, and I didn’t even apply there. Its a great school and everything, but I was set on A&M.

But how are the sciences?? that is what Cats is asking.

My son has a high SAT score so he too would qualify for a full ride, but if the science classes are not as good as A&M it is not worth it. And what about after graduation?
Can he expect the same or at least as good of a network to get a decent job out of college?

These things are important. A full ride is good, but after college is over if one cannot get a job…
I would suggest asking the admissions department who and what type of vendors show up for the job fairs.

sja1202… Go away. Your brand of message is not valued nor wanted. Do you feel so threatened that you must come over to this site and post garbage?

SMU is known for their Cox Business College. Their Sorority/Fraternity system is a big big deal. A full ride scholarship would certainly allow you to put money into their Greek system :
SMU is a beautiful campus, and a good school. But SMU is not a Tier 1 University.
A&M would certainly be a better choice for Science.

Texas A&M is a better choice imo. Two of my children are Aggie graduates and basically write their own tickets. My son is traveling the world now as a geologist making stacks of money…he has a degree in Bio-evironmental science. My daughter has a degree in Psychology with a minor in sociology and can pick and choose where she would like to work…when she puts her credentials up on monster.com etc, she gets tons of hits or whatever and is delighted. It is that Texas A&M diploma that does it. Also, both of these kids are forever astounded by the “Aggie network” and how far it reaches. My son was on an elevator in Anchorage and met a fellow who also had that Aggie ring and they were of course instant friends and comrades. My daughter is always telling me of different instances in life now where she gets “special treatment” when another Aggie and she cross paths. In fact, I am planning on going back to A&M at the age of 53 just to get that ring. It’s on my bucket list. I have an associates degree in nursing, but that is with another school. It is my lifelong dream to gradaute from Texas A&M and I am going to do it…WHOOP!

Correction …

SMU is a Tier 1 University.
