I am currently a freshman at Texas A&m university at college station. I am an engineering major. I am thinking of transferring to university of Michigan after my freshman year and continue engineering . Umich seems to be the better school overall, in terms of social life and academics. I am most likely going to join a fraternity to meet people but also to have fun which I am wondering if it doable as a engineering major. However I don’t want to leave Texas a&m because I have heard lots of great things about the “aggie network” and how awesome it is, but I have also heard of the umich’s network which is supposed to be just as good.
I guess my main concerns/questions are, is it worth it to transfer schools and how hard is it. A&m is a good engineering school but umich is a little better. Would appreciate some thoughts on the matter please.
Did you apply to Michigan as a freshman? Were you accepted? Where are you in-state? The cost differential is going to be stark depending on where you live!
i applied as a business major didn’t get in. Cost won’t be that be much of an issue since parents are paying for it thankfully. I am from texas so I will have to pay out of state tuition, but don’t i get in state tuition the year after?
No, you don’t get instate tuition the year after. And once you have junior standing, the OOS rate is even higher.
Your parents would have to MOVE there and pay taxes there for you to get instate rates. You’re just going there for an education.
do you know how hard it is to get into engineering at umich? just looked up cost and yeah it is expensive but getting a degree from Umich would be worth it IMO
I would check to see if your parents are willing to pay $60K/year for the same product you get at A&M for in-state rates.
Instate at A&M tuition (only) is $9700. Out-of-state tuition for Michigan is $42,000. Also, as a transfer, the social life at Michigan would be more difficult.
Most undergraduate engineering programs are pretty much equivalent. You can get the same education at Texas A&M, so finish your degree at A&M and go to University of Michigan for graduate school (if so desired). At Michigan, you can finish your MSE in 10 months (if you push it) to 1.5 years. That is what I did and it cost be $0.0 (company paid)!
