A Musical Dream**

I have always had a lifelong dream to pursue performing on Broadway or in other musical theatres. But, for backup, I do want a college eductaion/degree in music. I would love to become a music teacher or even open my own vocal training studio. I am just so confused about what college is right! I would like a college close to New York City with a great music program and I would love to know how many years or what I would need to take to become a music teacher or somwthing of the sort. Please, if you know what I'm talking about please notify me! Thank you so much for helping my future!!!!

Steinhardt at NYU has an excellent music education program. Here's a link for you:

Ithaca College would definitely be worth a look.

Check out the Musical Theater Forum listed under College majors. More information than you can imagine and very knowledgeable posters as well.

AwesomeAutumn,

Alwaysamom gave you an excellent suggestion in Steinhardt. Steinhardt not only offers a degree in music education, but they also have a renowned musical theatre program.

I'd venture to say that virtually every college and university in this country that has a music program offers a degree in music education. A music education degree usually takes 4 to 5 years to complete. Each state's board of education specifies what courses must be completed in order to become a certified teacher in that particular state. Because of these state requirements, which are usually quite specific, the number of credit hours required to earn a music education degree is usually higher than that for most other degree programs. In order to complete the program within a 4 year time frame, many students need to attend summer school.

I hope you will take Lexasmom's suggestion and check out the MT forum. There is a wealth of advice. If you take the FAQ link, you will find a big list of colleges that offer MT programs. Off the top of my head, in addition to NYU Steinhardt, NYU also offers an excellent MT program through the Tisch School of Theatre. Wagner College and Marymount Manhattan are also in NYC and offer MT programs. You might want to consider schools in Boston (Emerson and the Boston Conservatory) or Philadelphia (University of the Arts) or in other parts of New York. Syracuse and Ithaca have well respected MT programs. SUNY Buffalo might also be to your liking.

I hope you'll join the group at the MT forum.

The Mannes College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music are also worth checking out.
