A Navy Seal Analogy and the University of Chicago

I think we should have this post deleted. If it gets into the wrong hands, it may result in fewer people wishing to be part of the U Chicago community.

Maybe because they are over-represented :laughing:

If OP’s kid is one of those who received a top job offer in finance, then OP probably doesn’t need to worry about making himself feel better.

Not necessarily. This is a bit of a simplistic assumption without understanding the distinct role that college sports plays at UChicago vs. Ivies and other elite D1’s. Athletes who wish to pursue a deep intellectual life but still participate actively in and excel at sports may well find a fit at UChicago. OP has mentioned one such group.

TOS warn against making political or incendiary statements. Let’s keep it civil.

Another attempt to stifle speech. Michael - please enlighten us: who is this “we” you speak of? And who exactly are “the wrong hands?”

There’s nothing incendiary about pointing out that Ben Shapiro is a bona fide racist and a crackpot. Nor is there anything uncivil about it. Facts are facts and I’m sure Shapiro would delight in the accusations. Honestly, your whole analogy about Navy Seals makes zero sense, so please don’t patronize me.

Please don’t misquote me. I said URMs get admissions preferences.

That being said, is there any argument that right-leaning students are underrepresented on the campuses of elite universities?

Let’s calm down with the name calling. Whether you like Ben Shapiro or not, he does present a different point of view.

My favorite experience with Ben Shapiro is his You Tube interview with then Democratic Presidential Candidate Andrew Yang in April 2019. While it was obvious that Ben and Andrew disagreed on almost everything, their conversation was respectful, wide-ranging and at times friendly. These are the sort of conversations kids should be exposed to and having in college (and HS).

@michaeluwill
Cancel culture has no place on CC, on college campuses, or in free society in general. Anyone who feels cancel culture is okay is the one with the problem.

His “different point of view” is racist, homophobic and based on “alternative facts.” I will continue to characterize him as I wish.

Anyone who feels racists and homophobes are simply presenting “different points of view” is the problem. BTW, for someone clucking over name-calling you seem to need to take a good long look in the mirror. Calling other posters “problems”?

1NJ, can you please elaborate? From what OP has posted, the young men appear to be pretty willing to engage in civil discourse with others having different viewpoints. That doesn’t quite sound like indoctrination.

It was a joke. The point was that the post was unclear to me. You read that wrong. Same to @superdomestique.

Whatever the point of this thread was, it’s been derailed. Closing
