A&O: When are you going?

I was wondering what days everyone signed up for. Do you think July 27th and 28th will be too late? Thats when I signed up, but for business there was only one choice earlier.

i’m going to the june 25-26 one…it’s a general session. i was gonna do the social science (i think that’s what it is…haha…) session but i won’t be here most of the summer so i just did the general session lol

yeah i signed up for june 25-26 too. I wanted to to social science also, but since it was so late, i decided to just go with the first available one to give me the best chances i can for class registration since im 99% sure its first-come-first-serve priority, even for required classes.

Can someone fill me in on what these A&O sessions are? I’m guessing some sort of orientation, but haven’t seen any info on them yet? Are they specific to the major you’re admitted as (engineering, for example), and when is the deadline to sign up by?

If all this is answered on a page on the uw website, a link would be appreciated also so you don’t have to regurgitate all of that information for me.

Thanks :)

June 25-26… I’ve already picked out my major, but like cman and yellowsun, I’m going to be really busy this summer!

i havent committed yet!

but i’m hoping to decide this weekend, and then grabbing a spot in the earliest A & O session I can!

I just registered this morning for June 25-26
Does anyone know if you need to take a placement test for math before the A&O if you took the AP exam for calc. but don’t know your results yet?

Compactrunner: this is the UW’s First Year Programs website with all that information:

[First Year Programs at the University of Washington - Home](Home | First Year Programs)

i’ll send it too you in a PM too make sure you get it…

mzxhannah, if you took AP calc AB you dont have to take the math placement exam if you got a 2 or higher.

if you got a 2, the exam automatically places you into math 124
if you got a 3/4, you get credit for math 124
and if you get a 5 you get credit for math 124 and 125

hope that helps.

What about AP Statistics? The UW website says two different things…

Statistics 3,4,5
Counts toward STAT 311 (5 cr.) Statistical Methods.
Counts toward Natural World general education requirement for graduation. Also satisfies Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning graduation requirement.

Yeah. I just called them and figured it all out.

They really only need you to take the placement test if you’re in a major that requires calculus. Since I’m going to be a Japanese major, that’s obviously not much of an issue, so my AP Stat credit will take the Q & SR slot and I won’t need to take the placement test.

I just saved about $30 by making that call. Not much, but it’s a good feeling anyway. :)

Does anyone when they will confirm your session through email? I signed up a couple days ago and I still haven’t gotten the email. I’m thinking I might’ve done something wrong? Should I sign up again?

So, I committed friday night, and the A&O website still won’t let me register.

On MyUW it has already recognized that I’ve paid, and my email and everything is working. I emailed the FYP, but I was wondering if anyone else had run into this?
Or, how long did it take for your deposits to be processed so that you could register for A&O?

Yesssss 21st September… International Orientation :)

i was hoping i could go late august because i’m going to be out of the country. does this significantly reduce my chances of getting certain classes?

I’m wondering the same thing.
Because I just got on, (I recently committed), the earliest A&O session is late July, however I’ll be out of the country until alte August making the earliest one I can attend August 20-21. Do you think that will allow me to get the classes I want? Especially if they’re general classes? [I was thinking Pysch 101, Eng 131, Chem 142 hopefully clustered in a FIG]

it will definitely be much harder to get the classes that you want. i heard some classes were already close to being filled in late july last year. but there will still be some classes, so even if you dont get the ones you want, you can always sign up for them next quarter

padfoot, if you signed up for a fig, they’ve probably already set aside space in those classes for your group

Well, I want to sign up for a fig, is there anyway to do so ahead of time?

Yeah, I’m not totally worried, as long as I get into Chem 142 I should be fine, and I know they have a TON of sections of it. I’m just crossing my fingers that I’ll get Psych 101 as well.
