Hello! I’m a junior in CT currently enrolled in A.P. Chem. I’ve done a practice test for the Subject Test and scored far lower than I did on my A.P. Chem practice test–which I was pretty surprised about. Does anyone happen to know the gaps between the two? Are there any books addressing this? I ask bc I don’t want to study the unnecessary material–just the bulk of it, y’know?
Anyways–any advice is really appreciated! Thank you so much in advanced.
Not surprising at all. The Subject Tests covers basic HS chem while the AP exam mirrors an intro college course.
I doubt it, since the AP course is not designed to prepare one for the Subject Test. There are a few sites which highlight some of the differences (which are not allowed to be linked here), but if you’ve taken a practice test, then you should be able to identify the areas that you need to concentrate on.
what do you mean by “far lower”?
The ST curve is much less forgiving, so it’s more difficult to earn an 800 than a 5 on the AP. However, a 5 usually translates into a 7xx.
Best thing to do is ask your AP teacher if s/he knows what topics that you should self study for the ST.
Does taking AP Chem help for taking the Chem Subject Test?
I did not do well on the Subject II Chem test last year, I took honors chem last year. Should I even reconsider retaking the SAT II Chem?
Back 3 years ago, my kid took AP Chem test and 5 days later took the Chem subject test. He prepared like maybe 30 minutes taking one practice test for the subject test since he had more APs to do the following week. He got a 780 on the Chem subject test. He also went straight to AP Chem, he never took a previous Chem class before. (Got a 5 on the AP Chem test).
