A.P. Self Study

Hey guys, i know that there are other threads out there much like this, but i do not want to go through the labor of going through each thread searching for these answers so Please be kind and help me guys!!! :)

alright, so I'm relatively new to the CC community, and in the past
month i have discovered SO MUCH from you fellow CC'ers. THanks!!!!

I come from a public school where only a few (4-5) kids pass A.P. exams each year (3's and 4's), and im not to sure how i did on my tests this year (European, Biology, & English Language).

With that said i really want to finish high school off with a "bang" if you know what i mean..
HAHAH

ok, my schedule for next year is:
A.P. Calculus A/B (my school doesn't offer B/C)
A.P. English Literature
A.P. Physics B (again my school doesn't have C)
A.P. Macro/Mico Economics
A.P. Art History

People at my school think my schedule is "suicide" but compared to some CC'ers out there this is nothing! I am considering self studying an A.P. next year, which NO ONE in my school does or even thinks about. I repeat NO ONE! I'm debating between Psychology, Environmental Science, and Human Geography (my school does not offer any).

I am not trying to "pad" my application, i really want to learn more. With that said I'm really interested in human geography, but i dont think any high school on my island, I wonder what state i'm from? hmmmm... offers the class. I dont mind studying for pscyh or environmental, its just Human Geo is my first choice.

How do i find out what schools offer what tests? (I'm unsure how my counselor/Ap Coordinator will react toward my decision to self study, so im trying to figure out everything about self studying). Do i call or email the collegeboard about this?

How did you self study? Did you actually purchase the textbook or did you rely strictly on prep books (Kaplan, Princeton, Barrons, etc)? Which method is more effective (or maybe a combination of the two)?

Please help me guys.. I want to make the most out of our Senior year. C/O 2012!!!

You should contact the schools themselves to see what they offer.

To get 5s on AP exams, buy a Kaplan, Princeton, Barrons, etc. prep book. A textbook would help too but it’s far easier to use a prep book to review, though the textbook might have more information. If you review properly, a textbook won’t even be necessary, just a prep book will suffice.

However, I don’t think self studying in senior year is even noticed by the colleges. May be wrong about this. Still, if you want to go ahead and do it, do Human Geography, it’s pretty easy. Don’t feel obliged to do at least one though since I don’t think it affects your application, so unless you are as passionate about environmental or psych, skip that.

If human geography is really your first choice and is interesting to you, by all means do it. However, I’m pretty sure a lot of colleges dont give credit for this. Plus, the exam is really easy. Many do fail the exam because of this allusion, but if you literally cram for like 2 nights before the exam, you will be well prepared. I self-studied for Psychology and Human Geo this year and am expecting 5s on both. I think Psychology was definitely more fun and interesting to learn about, but it takes a little longer than 2 nights. Good luck in your decision!

For psychology, I purchased the Barron’s review book and the Barron’s flashcards and studied solely off of that. It was sufficient.

^ I just used Barron’s (the review book, not the flashcards). Barron’s is all you need to get a 5.
