A paranoid chinese kid

to answer your question dawgquelle, i really don't know how i have 4.1w. all i know is i live in canada and we have weird system. a 100%=5.0 (no one in my city has that), 80% is an A, and is =4.0, but if you have over 80%, for very 2%, GPA goes up by 0.1
oh darn, my counselor calculated my gpa wrong!, it should be 4.2 btwatever. i'll talk to her. we have no AP, i have taken 100% honors (most rigorous at my school). and i want to study life sciences

Newby I'm curious, did your counselor suggest safeties?

no, unfortunately, i am the only applicant at my school to apply to american school. and my counselors don't know much about american schools.

what abt safeties in your own country?

still, i wanna go to the US, b/c my mom is in the US and our family is kind of like split right now and she has to travel all the time (and she gets air sick) so i hoped to go to america (some may say this doesn't make sense, b/c my mom may work some where different than where i go to school, but my mom works for a big company that has many offices in many states of america, not in my country :( )

Maybe you should post this on the Parent Forum. They might have good ideas.

"(well, kind of leaning on sending a letter of explanation, b/c my average is 84%ish but it's one of the highest in school, however, counselor doesn't rank and thus, it doesn't really show how i have better grades than my peers. should i write to universities saying that even though i only have a 73%, it's still good since class average is 42%?)"

Is this in a class? What class? Why do you have a 73%? Is it a class that you are not strong in?

"yes i know, my teacher is crazy, b/c apparently, his son is in 3rd year uni. and he didn't do well on MCAT. and now, the teacher is trying to fail every1, so to make himself feel better. however, he could not get fired, b/c there is union protecting him. and if i bring this issue up at school council meeting, he'll pwn me on the next test, even as now, he hates me, b/c i ask questions he can't answer. and he tries to give me the lowest grade possible."

If you are going to write a letter explaining the situation, definitely do NOT put that in there. Even if its the truth.

"this ain't bs, i am talking about in 1 class, the class average is 42% and i have 73%"

Ahh...okay. Now it makes sense. You mean in just one course, not the senior class. What class is this that you have the 73 in?

Do you know what the rest of your grading scale is? I'm trying to figure this out. So,
A+ = 5 grade points
A = 4 grade points ???
Do you know all of your final grades in the courses that you have completed?

i am so confused with this grading scale. cuz if u're taking all the honors courses possible and i assume doing well on them, i would not expect a 4.1 W GPA.. i dunno if that number is accurate but it may not look well on colleges especially since you're chinese.

there must be a way to get your real GPA cuz that is absurdly low and i assume u've taking more than a couple of honors courses and you are a bright applicant.

it's a chem class, let's just say, and my gpa goes (4.0 for every1 with avg about 80%) and then weighted goes up to 5.0, if you take honor courses (university courses in canada) then, based on ur avg, if you get more than 80%, then for each 2% about 80%, you get 0.1 more on your GPA, i have a 4.1-.42, b/c my avg is better 82-84

cmon, keep this thread alive, ppl, guidance

Im sure you' ll get into at least one of the schools you applied to. Good luck!

You've asked for advice, and you've gotten some very good advice from the previous posters -- you need to add some safeties. But you have to do it soon.

i know i got some great advice, but i would like to hear more
