I know a rising junior who is creating multiple nonprofit organizations to build up his resume. What shocks me the most is that his dad who is a very famous CPA is doing all the work, from creating the organization, getting 501c3 license, providing money to give scholarships to local students.
What do you all think about this? Is there any way to “report” this?
Nothing illegal about helping out your kid. Obviously if the kid trys to pass it off as his own work it wouldn’t be ethical but I don’t think there is anything to report here.
Just my two cents…
In situations regarding “made-up/artificial” extracurricular activities, I generally hold the belief that you should report the individual to a school official, but in this particular case, I strongly advise you ignore it for now.
You indicate that the junior is creating the organizations, and that the CPA dad is obtaining the 501c3 designation and funding scholarships. It sounds like a win-win. Why not withhold judgment until you see what the outcomes are? You may actually end up congratulating the student rather than “reporting” him.
As someone who comes from a school where many kids are coddled by their parents, I say just ignore it. While it definitely sucks to see someone getting stuff “easily” like this junior is, there is truth in that it will eventually come back to haunt them. This kid may not have real leadership abilities and that will come out in the future. So, just mind your own business and work hard.
