A penny for your advice

Hey guys. i am currently a Canadian student going into grade 11 in an IB school. I am very new to the whole American college finding process so i thought id start of here.

I want to go into pre med( not sure abt the details yet). I am looking to go into a university, hopefully top 20 in medicine?.

Just to give you an idea about what type of student i am..
My SAT mark is 2140 but i have a while to improve on that(hopefully to 2250)
I have a 90 % average currently in pre-IB.

With all this being said, I was wondering about some possible colleges i could apply for. Any names would be really appreciated. thanks guys.

I would recommend Cornell and University of Rochester.

Can you say more about your preferences regarding college? Bio major?

thx for replying:)
well as sad as it sounds, im not really sure yet about my major to be honest. however, a friend of mine whos older than me got into John Hopkins for pre med and he suggested i look into that. That's honestly one of the few places i know that are currently on my list.

ps: my ECs are average at the moment. nothing spectacular but im planning to chance that in the next two years.

im in a similar situation as you. ill keep an eye on this thread:)

Sounds like a similar situation to mine as well.

I'm in the GTA area... but I'm in a enhanced/gifted program instead of IB (mostly because of transportation issues and extracurriculars). I'm probably self-studying some APs though.

I know two people in my school who applied ED for Cornell, both were accepted, and one is planning to do pre-med. They had SAT scores between 2150 - 2250ish, but both had significant ECs (Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, or DECA International Placings, etc.)

Are you looking to eventually go to medical school in the states or come back to Canada?

my preference is going to med school in the states but i wouldnt mind canada . i know theres U of T or Mcgill. but yea id rather stay in the states. Do you know what the one guy who got into cornell for pre-med is majoring in?

bump. i need more names :)

I think she was interested in Biology and Society as well as Psych. :) She got into CAS if that helps.

Shad Faraz: You should look at the medical school board here on CC. There will be information on how to track the success of pre-med programs in placing students into medical schools as well as lots of posts that point out that one doesn't have to major in science to get into medical school - one can major in almost anything so long as one has excellent grades in the subjects that medical schools require.

So in choosing colleges to apply to, you may be shifting the basis on which your decision is made.

In addition, I suggest that in the end, you may decide to do something other than medical school, or perhaps not be admitted to a medical school, so you should choose your college applications also on the basis of the schools' generally good programs.

You offered too little. To get our two cents, you need to double your lowball offer of one penny for our advice.

Where do you want to practice/practise medicine?

That is the question that you really need to answer first. It will tell you where you need to study medicine, which will tell you what kind of undergraduate degree you need.

Why don't you try the myUsearch college matching service at myUsearch. Petersons.com and collegeboard.org are also good. They will ask you a list of questions and then tell you which schools will fit your needs. Hope that helps!

Probably better to do med school in the US –*I was talking to a medical student who went UG in Canada but decided to go to a US allopathic (i.e. M.D. granting) med school because of something about limited training spaces and what amount to quotas in med school and location limits to where you can practice.

Anyway, you can UG anywhere reputable to get into a US med school.

The IB should help you. it helped me lots
