A Picture as Part of My Application!?

So I have been hearing that Brown asks for an optional picture of the applicant in his or her application. Is this true? How long has it been like this? Will this stay true for further years? I’m asking because I have some pretty cool pictures in mind. :)

Yes, it's been this way for quite some time and will be for the foreseeable future.

Awesome- so do most people send in a picture? How much do you guys think the picture actually means to the admissions people? Do any of you current students have examples of pictures you sent in?

It doesn't mean much at all, it's just a way to put a face to a name, and I imaigne nearly everyone does. I don't know anyone who didn't, though people take it to different extremes. Some people just throw in their senior photos, others something different. I'm not sure if I still have my photos, let me take a look for oyu.

I took a pic with a digital cam and turned it black and white.

Yeah, but I am sure that if a photo is completely outrageous, it would at least put a smile on the admission person's face and maybe sway the decision a little.

PM me your email address and I'll email the pictures (it's in Word since .doc was hte only format they'd except multiple images in because if I made a single jpg I think it worked out to be too large a file).

The other day I was recognized by an admissions guy, who not only recognized me, but knew my name, and not just my name, but my nickname. And I applied 3 years ago. It was slightly creepy, but I see the point of the picture.

hm, I didn't include a picture at all so I guess it isn't that big of a deal. I probably would have if I had known it was an option, and I'm sure it's nice for the adcoms to personalize the admissions process further.

What do you mean if you would have known? That app has a big box that says "place picture here"...unless they changed it recently.

Maybe it wasn't as prominent on the online application? Whatever the reason, I distinctly remember including pictures for Columbia and Georgetown but not for Brown. Guess I skipped over that page or something.

http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Admission/appforms/Transfer/Tran-Form3-Per.pdf

page 2

I happened not to include a pic b/c I didn't see where; I still got in.

I'm amazed at you guys missing that!

I didn't remember a spot for it on the online app, so I didn't send mine in. Didn't even know it was an option till I saw a thread like this a couple weeks later. No idea if it helps, but I got in anyway so...

But just as an aside, there is always that unconscious bias towards beautiful people (in human nature). It can't hurt if you're attractive, though I may stay away from doing so if...unattractive. =)

idk, i think ugly folk may resent pretty people

True...which is why I find it a little strange the picture is included, what if the reader gets a snap impression from the picture itself?

maybe they go through intense training to avoid that

I know Columbia definitely asks for the picture, and at least when I was considering applying to Wheaton (MA) a few years ago, they did as well. I remember the Wheaton admissions officers saying that they actually liked the "odd" pictures, like people who drew or offered artistic representations of themselves, because it showed more personality. They just wanted a face to put to the name, as others above have said.

I cannot find any reference to pictures on this year application. Can we still send the picture? If yes, where do we attach it?
