A piece of advice and wisdom please

One thing to keep in mind is that depending on OP’s student Visa situation to be allowed to study as an international student, it’s very likely his Visa may prohibit him from seeking any work while studying in the US.

Some members of my extended family before they became citizens and international undergrad/grad classmates had similar issues in this regard. Worse, unless they are able to change their visa to one which allows them to work*, their doing so on the sly could get their student visa revoked and them deported. This almost happened to an older uncle due to immigration authorities being mistaken as he shared a similar name to a student in the same area who was working illegally.

  • Practically impossible due to immigration bureaucracy and the longstanding policy of not desiring to encourage a situation where international students end up using their status as international students as the first step to immigrating here as permanent residents.

I will think about small loans if even possible…thanks for all the sugestions.

I don’t want my kids to take loans either, but they may need to. It makes no sense to pay for a class and then have no money for the books.

I hope you realize that no matter how cheaply you can live, and how you have it budgeted to the penny, something is going to come up and you are going to need some money. My daughter had one class that required a yoga mat and some special ($30) pillow. She was fined $5 (twice!) for locking herself out of her dorm room. The other daughter was fined $5 for a beaker that was lost or broken in the lab, even though she swears she returned it. There are just times you are going to need $10 for something.

Don’t be miserable. Get yourself a little fund to start off, either by a loan or family gift or selling something you own. If you don’t use it, great, pay it back at the end of the semester. I don’t know what your work status is but can you get a job as a hasher (server) in one of the greek houses? Usually these pay a little and you get free meals. The university would then refund your meal plan and you’d have a credit on your university account. Maybe there is some work you can do for someone in exchange for meals or getting to wash your clothes at their house or exchange for something you need.

I can get a job in school.(on campus, 20 hr per week max)
I am aiming to get a tutor job(and two people I know from my HS will write LOR for me) but there is no guarantee I will get that. Same for other jobs; not guaranteed to get it, and it seems like foreign students face more competition in getting jobs.

Did you answer ‘yes’ to my “Do you have a credit card?” question?

@paul2752

Oh it was a response to harvestmoon question

Alright, so, it seems like you are avoiding the question. Do you have a credit card?

No I dont have one. I just forgot to answer ur question.Why would I avoid it?
I think I cant have one because I dont have SSN since I am a foreigner. If I get a job in school Iwill get SSN though

Also, I talked to the professors and they said both webassign and owl2 have free trial. I will use them for the free trial period and during that time maybe I can stack some money.

Thanks for all the suggestions
