My S just arrived in Montreal to work as a grad student at McGill. There was a miscommunication about temporary housing so he is staying in a hostel. All the ads he responded to regarding roommates have come to a dead end. Any ideas on where he should look for housing? TIA!

If you don’t see anything you like, just walk around the western and eastern areas near campus and look for A Louer signs. Sometimes you’ll have to call them and ask, but most of the time you can just walk in to the rental office and check out the housing. Studios and 2 1/2s near campus are overpriced however, and you might have more difficulty since it’s now September and a lot are now occupied.

Thanks for your reply. I think he would really prefer a roommate. Do you think that’s impossible at this point? Btw, what is a 2 1/2?

The housing sizes in Montreal are stated in # of rooms + 1/2 (The bathroom). So a 3 1/2 would be 3 separate rooms (E.g. one bedroom one living room, one kitchen), plus a bathroom.

As for a roommate, he’d really have to call some of the ads on the McGill website, or another like Craigslist. Probably not impossible though. The housing market seems to be very fluid here.

Thank you for your help!

Substract 2 1/2 and that is usually the number of bedrooms. Also I remember seeing on McGill housing website that there still might be an opening in their dorms. It is probably a long shot, but I would try looking to their in-campus housing also, someone might have dropped out for some random reason.

Can grad students live in the dorms? That was the first miscommunication. His professor told him there would be temporary housing in the dorms, but they told him that was only for undergrads and, it ended in August. Is there also a Downtown Campus? Honestly, I have not done any research on McGill so this is all new to me. He is on foot today looking for a room. :/

I think some dorms are only for undergrads, and some can accommodate grad students. You should talk to the McGill Housing, it should not hurt to at least try.

The question is, would he even want to? Unless it’s a dorm strictly for grad students, I wouldn’t advise it.

I have looked at McGill housing website, and there are graduate specific housing provided by the university.

I guess the next question is whether anything is available at the grad res. Typically, grad residences at many/most schools are usually full by the start of summer. It’s worth a call but chances are slim that there would be immediate availability.

I just noticed this comment by the OP. Oh, yes, of course, there’s a downtown campus. That campus IS the main campus. Where is your son? I’m curious as to what his plan was if he was able to get temporary housing upon his arrival.

His plan was to do temporary housing until he found a permanent place to live. He will only be there for 10 months. Fortunately, yesterday he found a place to live! He has been haunting the McGill Classifieds and after many inquiries, he has found a good match. Thank you to all that have responded. Now, I am reading the boards regarding phones, checking accounts, sending packages, etc. So much to do, so little time…
