Perhaps this has been beaten to death in the past, or perhaps something like this is already in place and I’ve missed it, but is there any chance of a prominently placed guideline for discussion subject lines in general forums like this?
Scanning for threads I might be able to add something to, I see a lot extremely generic subject lines like:
Help Me Pick A College
How’s My List?
Tell me what to do…
Because it’s hard to figure out what’s worth clicking on (that is, where I might have something to offer or where I might learn something) and what’s not, I skip right over them unless they come up in a search, and I suspect a lot of others do to.
Ideally, a subject should include at least something about the poster’s area of interest, whether that be major, location, or vibe, and the more of that the merrier.
X-type student looking for Y type school in Z-type location
More schools like Q but (more/less X/Y)
Ideas for Y-type major with strength in Z as well.
Looking for schools strong in X major with Y vibe and good merit
In a forum devoted TO a specific college or topic, it’s less important to spell all that out, of course, but in these general forums it would be really helpful for both the OP and any readers that follow.
Just my 2c. Feel free to laugh if I’ve missed a really obvious post about all this.
