A Poor Guy's Chances...

Hello all that are willing to help me,

I'm and international student (Indian citizen living in Venezuela) that is considering applying, but I need to know whether I stand a good chance or not. Here are some quick numbers:
SAT: 1410 (690 Math & 720 Verbal)
SAT IIs (Retaking): Math IIC - 750, Writing - 720, and Physics - 640
GPA: 3.37 on a 4.0 scale
Rank: Approx. top 20%

Oh, and here is just some side info:
- Doing full IB with 4 Higher Level courses.
- Go to an American International School in Caracas, Venezuela.
- Can only pay about $6000 per year.
- Need A LOT of financial-aid.

Here are the places I'm applying to (in order from reaches to safeties):
Harvard, Dartmouth, Vassar, Colgate, Bates, Macalester, Trinity University (San Antonio), Union College (NY), Beloit College, Earlham College, U. of Mississippi, Arizona State U., U. of Maine at Orono, International U. of Bremen.

Oh, and just to get a feel for who I am, my interests:
Academic - Mathematics, Astronomy, Economics.
Non-Academic - Theater Arts, Music, performing, philosophy, politics, debate, writing all kinds of stuff from poetry and stories to analytical papers.

Could you tell me my chances at place? If I can't get into some of these college, could you suggest places where I could get in? Oh, and all of this conisdering I'm an international seeking a HUGE aid package. Thank you very much to those who help me out! It's very much appreciated, and if anyone needs help, please free to ask me.

PS: If you want me to present my ECs and awards, tell me, and I'll do so.

everywhere but the 1st two colleges on your list, which are pretty impossible with your stats. you won't get much money from them, even if somehow you got in with 1410s and in the top 20%.

Haha, if I can get in anywhere else except for those two places, that'd be awesome enough. But, what I'm concerned about is whether they'll offer my aid packages worth up to $30,000 a year!

Anyone else?

Yes, annoying, but I bump.

Hard to get help around here, huh?

Speaking of aid, I personally know that Beloit College offers financial aid to international students. Their terrific aid package is what got me to go there. If I were you, I would contact someone at Beloit's International Education Department to see if they are likely to give you enough $ to make school possible. The web link is:

My brother went to Earlham and I believe that they also are generally known to have pretty good financial aid.

I think that you will find that the smaller liberal arts colleges are going to be more generous than the state schools with their financial aid.

Hope this helps

You want full scholarship? This is going to sound odd and you probably wont want to do it, but find a state university with relatively cheap out of state fees and a low international population. University of Montana would drool over you, you'd get into the honors college and most likely a full scholarship. You're best bet education is at an honors college at a state university in the South, Midwest, and Northern Rockies (Why? Because these areas tend to have low numbers of international students). And although "icemaker" is right when he says that small liberal arts colleges offer more financial aid, they also cost alot more, State U's with UI/M populations tend to hover around 10k, and with your credentials will pay your whole way through.

PS. Out of the colleges you listed; U-Mississippi, Arizona State-U, U-Maine are pretty sure things for you and you'll probably get good financial aid, especially from Maine.

Wow, okay, you two peeps have been the most helpful thus far, and I thank you for that. University of Montana, right? All right, I'll look them up. Well, there is one more thing I have been wondering about: is there any way to exempt myself from the out-of-state fees for state universities? See, I did exempt myself from some state-U in Louisiana, but I didn't like the school. Could you suggest some other places where I could get such an exemption, or a process I must go through to get it at any state-U? Thank you, very much.

I honestly think you should apply to rice and you would probably get in..they have a low international and low Indian descent students. It is a cheap school that gives an ivy education. I want to go there but I might not have a chance but your chances are high so good luck to you.
Also, since you are of Indian descent...you might get into Harvard...they have too many asians and whites hahah...they need minority so yeah...good luck to ya..just work hard.

Actually, I had Rice University on my list until about two days ago when I removed it upon finding out that they don't offer financial aid to international students. They offer scholarhips, however. But their largest scholarship is $8000 per year, and that goes to the very top students. If I were to get that scholarship out of some miracle, I'd still have to pay a hefty sum of about $20,000, as a Rice education costs approximately 28 grand a year. Any other places?

Rice or Harvard..you would so get in because they need minorities!! Dont worry but I wish I had your stats because I really want to go to Rice...

I'm a minority? Aren't there a bunch of Indians in both of those places and all over the US. When I say, "Indian," I mean from the country, India, not native-americans, haha. If that's what you were thinking, then I'm still screwed. If not, then I'm in luck, hehe. But, what are your stats? Do you live in Houston? If so, where? Because I lived there for about five and a half years.

PS: What's funky is that I have a Rice walking-tour video cassette sitting right next to me, heh.

yes i do live in houston. you are so lucky that rice wants you..trust me they do and at rice there are a lot of white and asian ppl and i am pretty sure they dont have a lot of indian ppl but then again...i stop looking because they dont want me..so best of luck to you. you should watch that video..you lucky smart little punk you!! lol

HAHAH man, my stats aren't that great. At least, that's what I've been told, ehh. No, but dude, tell me yours. Oh, and what's your name? That's always good to know. Btw, I lived in front of Memorial Mall for the longest time lol.

Your stats are way better than mine..just click the link to one of my post that tells all because I am too ashamed to say what my stats are...http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=19403
Anywho, I am working on my essay and my gameplan for Rice...hahaha...
My name is Jackie and since you are online...my aim is lilhtownroxygirl.
I live by Sharptown Mall..moved there not too long ago.

let me get this straight..you dont live in houston anymore right?

Ah, I've added you to my list, and strangely, my SN is still the one I made in Houston: htown1398. Haha, yes, I was in middle school when I made that. But in any case, no I don't live there anymore. I moved about four years ago. I first moved to New Delhi, India and then to Caracas, Venezuela, which is where I am residing at the moment.

So, any other opinions?

I am currently at Beloit College and the main reason I came here was because of how much money they were able to give me. They really take pride in international students so I know they would love to give you money!
