I'm international too!
I want to get in with decent scholarship, otherwise I can't afford it. =(

I need some help, guys!
I just found out that the "why" Grinnell short answer has to be under 500 characters. I am having troubles on showing my personality and my passion towards Grinnell in a concise paragraph.
Any advice???

Really just show them what it is about them in particular that you like. Talk about what they offer that no other school does and why you want to go there as opposed to some other small LAC.

My essay for that was only 201 words, and I easily got across what I needed. And I got in.

I'm considering ed2 in fact because Grinnell has a high ed acceptance rate.
But once I am admitted, the financial aid will only meet 70%-85% of my demonstrated need as officially stated. That's why my parents are trying to dissuade me from applying Grinnell in ed2. What should I do?

Hi. Maybe Im confused (once again) but I dont see a "why Grinnell" on thier supplement. I see 2 short answers - how did you first hear abnout Grinell? and what would you bring / take away? am i wrong?

chicagoal: I think by answering that two questions, you just answer "why"

McFlavia,
I would call the Financial Aid office and talk with them about your situation. We have found them to be very helpful. They may be able to do a "preadmission" assessment and give you a reasonably good idea about what you could expect. Oberlin did this for our D (however she ended up deciding not to do ED there). Additionally, my understanding is if the college does not meet your demonstrated need, you are not bound to the ED.

hornet,
Good advice. Thank you very much!
Anyway,My parents just changed their minds. They promised to lend money to fill the gap, provided that I work for 2 years after graduation before I go into graduate school, or their stock price go up again.

chicagoal: "What would you bring / take away?"

That is asking "why?" It's the same question with more words.

As for the "How did you hear about Grinnell?" I wrote one sentence.

the question is: Grinnell College is a place where students come to be part of a distinctive community. Tell us what makes you an individual and what you could bring to Grinnell, but also tell us about what you wish to take away from Grinnell College.

i agree with casual, you can just answer it like a "why grinnell" essay.

OR i think they leave a lot of room for u to actually talk about yourself more. So i think u can say what makes u unique and what u can bring to a college community that nobody else can, and then what you can get out of Grinnell that you can't get from any other college (the second part basically just being "why grinnell").

mcawesome is spot-on.

500 characters is probably less than 100 words. My daughter also found it challenging to answer this question with this restriction.

i forget: do you have the option of uploading documents to the supplement so your answer can be more than 500 characters? because, well, that's not many...

yeah you can upload a document....it's always so tricky with that type of thing tho. like it says 500 characters, but u can just upload a document and make it as long as you want.
it's up to you. but remember, college admissions peeps have a gazillion of these things to read.

I don't know if this would be helpful to those stressing over the "why Grinnell" but here goes.

D is a first year at Grinnell. Her "why Grinnell" was roughly 200 words. For her statement, she read through the literature we got from the school as well as the college magazine. She found a story in the Grinnell magazine that appealed to her and wrote a very short piece that related how her personal qualities matched up to the spirit of Grinnell.

Don't sweat this too much. I think they are simply looking to see if you have done your homework in terms of knowing Grinnell and what characteristics you have that are a match.

Good luck everyone. It is a fantastic education with great students.

Oops, got the word count wrong. Here reply was four average size sentences (very small paragraph).

Ookie.. so I decided to apply to Grinnell pretty much at the last minute. I like it, but I have to admit it's the fin aid that's the main attraction for me.

But anyway what are the chances of me getting in: SAT = 2070, international student - sri lankan, applying for aid, um ECs = yearbook, Interact club, badminton, school prefect, photography society, music and dance society, worked at brit council edu fair, community service via interact club.. + a couple of others. AS results = 4 As, OLevel = 4As 4A*s

also, is it not worth to attend grinnell if i do not intend to pursue a postgrad degree immediately?? (A lot of reviews on **************.com were realllllyy discouraging)

why is that censored?

You can't post links to competitors' websites.

oh right.. anyway. could someone pleeeeassee chance me?!
