A question about being homeless

Well, I just filled out my FAFSA (A little late in the game but my intentions were to just go to community college) and I had to put in there that I was homeless. Throughout my Sneior year of high school I was homeless on and off but just until recently, I got kicked out of my parents house for good. It's a long story that's not very essential to my question.

The financial aid website for the university I want to go to suggests that I find documentation for being homeless. I was kicked out a month ago and working things out with my parents isnt going to work, I've tried. I haven't really stayed in a shelter yet because I've been "couch surfing" with my friends. Now I need this documentation, how can I get this documentation without having to stay in a shelter? It's not as if my friends are providing me permanant residence or anything, I actually am homeless, I just need the docs. Where do I go?>

I’ve just been investigating this sort of thing for a friend of my sons.

Someone suggested checking to see about having your parents sign something that confirms that they have no intention of supporting you financially or with housing. Ask about that at your financial aid office.

I think you will need some other outside corroboration like by your minister or a guidance counselor (otherwise all parents would state they won’t support their children).

I guess the question I have is does FAFSA share this information? Is someone going to sue your parents? In my states, there have cases where the state has sued parents of kids over 21 who did not provide a home?

Dependency Override might apply in this case; have a look at:

http://www.kidscounsel.org/dependency%20override.pdf</a>
[FinAid | Professional Judgment | Dependency Overrides](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Dependency Overrides - Finaid)

You need to work with the financial aid office of each school where you want to apply. Most schools should be familiar with the procedure; 2% of all college students get a dependency override.

No, you don’t need the documentation, they just want you to provide it if you have been certified by a shelter, school, etc. Go to the FA office at your intended college, they can also make the determination. See page 49 of the FAFSA instructions as well for addt’l info:
