A question about co-requisite?! - _ =

Hi, everyone

I just want to ask what is the general rule on co-requisite in Stanford???

Are the co-requisites strictly enforced? And if they are, is there a way you can petition out of a co-requisite?

(Because I have self-studied all the materials covered in a course, and since that is not a requirement for my intended major, I want to just skip it and continue on, is that possible!?) Thanks

I would ask the professor.

Co-requisites and pre-requisites are...loose, to say the least. In most cases, you can feel free to ignore them, as long as you're sure you're prepared. Think of them as...suggestions, if you will.

Thanks guys, I'll definitely ask the professor for advise.

Just out of curiousity, jwj, are you a chemistry major?
I am planning to major in chemistry too !!!! Hope to see you after summer on campus!!! (Im international so cant go to admit week)

I am a chem major, at the moment. We'll see if I can do that and bio and still graduate in time.

but if the class you want to take is chem36 and you haven't taken the "prereq" chem33, they might give you a hard time because axess actually blocks you from registering! >_>

This is true...this didn't actually become a problem until they shut down the old chem building years ago due to asbestos issues. It's just really competitive now that there's so much less lab space that they've had to enforce that particular pre-req. For most other things, however, they're loose.

but then they increased the enrollment limit by 40 people to accomodate some other kids who couldn't register because if was full...and then a BUNCH of kids dropped, so I think there must be extra space.
anyway, I finally got registered YAY happy ending

Haha, congrats! Yeah...a lot of people drop, I guess, since they don't realize how much of a commitment 4 hours a week in lab can be.

I want to do chem 36 and chem 35 in the first quarter, because my IB will place me out of 33. But the problem is that I havent asked my IB to be sent yet (forgot) and I worry it wont arrive in time for the first quarter. What should I do? Get a photocopy of my score online in August and contact the instructor?

That would probably be the best thing, usually profs tend to be good about stuff like that as long as you contact them beforehand.

@ LF61 so dunno about the IB's but for placement out of classes based on the A-Levels, the registrars office (place where you have to go to get placements done) only accepts ORIGINALS. I took certified photocopies but they didn't accept them, my friends brought their original certificates from home once they were issued and got placed out of whatever classes. If you email the prof ahead of time though, he can probably let you register based on the photocopies. but do email him - AND you'll need the originals to actually have the placement show up in Axess
