How is one able to do extracurricular activities if they have classes throughout the afternoon and evening?
Is it the norm to have classes throughout the afternoon and evening? I don’t think I know of anyone whose afternoons/evenings are booked with classes - my own schedule has me out by noon from all my classes. I think most people have most, if not all, of their classes in the mornings, allowing them ample time to get involved otherwise on campus.
Some people may schedule evening classes at college, if they aren’t available at other times, and some people schedule some of their classes after noon, especially the late risers. However, I believe the majority of students don’t schedule classes after 3-4 p.m. or so, and many universities have ‘operating hours’, and after a certain time they are mostly closed down. I think this is usually 4-5 P.M., and classes scheduled after this are ‘night classes.’
So, to answer your question, while some people may schedule classes for their afternoon/ evening, most do not and can attend any activities they wish. Those who do schedule classes in the evening are more limited in what they can participate in, but can probably still join some. Did this answer your question?
In addition to classes, students who work often have work in the evenings. However, between classes and work and classes that have tests in the evening instead of during classtime, and other unavoidable commitments, many students have issues attending extracurriculars regularly. So most extracurriculars, other than highly competitive athletic teams, are quite aware they will have issues with people committing and are therefore quite flexible. Even more so since many extracurriculars in college are student-run.
I worked in the evenings so often wasn’t able to go to club meetings. I would get on the email list of clubs I was interested in. They would often email out updates with events or opportunities or just general updates with the club. That was a way to keep up with what was going on with the club, and I would participate in events that I could attend–like when they had volunteering or social events on the weekends and such.
But for the most part, if you really want to attend events (whatever you happen to want to do for an extracurricular activity), then you may have to change your class schedule to accommodate if you really are booked solid every afternoon and evening.
It’s not uncommon for students to have a singular class with a later timeslot due to lack of other availability or something like that. However not starting until 1pm or something like that is weird.
I haven’t heard of a college that schedules most of their classes in the afternoons and evenings. From the ones I have been familiar with, that is an option but it is by no means the only one. Can you schedule any of them in the morning? That would make certain parts of attending meetings easier.
However, that is not the only way to get involved in extracurricular activities. Oftentimes if you stay updated with the social media groups or emails, several of them will hold events on weekends as well so it is perfectly acceptable to simply go to those events. If this is simply a one semester thing, you can still try to get involved next semester when your schedule changes. It’s hard for me to imagine that a college would schedule EC activities in the afternoon and evenings if it only offers classes then
I’m going to mirror what everyone else said. Most of the time you won’t have a schedule packed with night classes. 2 semesters ago I had the most- M-W I had a night class but I started my classes that day late.
This last semester I had 1 class on Monday (4-630) and therefore was able to work that morning (I did 7-4) so there is definitely time
