A question about GPA for admissions. .

Hey everybody.

Does anyone know how heavily BU looks at freshman year GPA? Cause mine was pretty crappy - - - 2.0 sem. 1 and 3.5 sem. 2. This equals out to 2.75 for fresh year. . . yeah i know.

So right now (im a junior) my gpa is a depressing 3.2. (w) But, without freshman year, it’s a 3.68.(w)

Thanks for anyhelp!

is there a reason for your low gpa? if there's a valid reason then explain it in your essay. if not, im sure that it will come into play enough that if you got accepted itd be to cgs

Umm so your basically saying that unless I have a pretty good reason for it, I'll only be accepted to cgs at BEST??

I mean the summer before fresh year I had a major surgery but I honestly don't think that had anything to do with it. I think I just really didn't take the 1st semester of high school very seriously. I blew of studying and work and stuff and then by second semester and all the way up to now I buckled down and I'm doing well.

I screwed up but if they look at my grades they can see how drastically they have improved. Would BU not understand that?

i would explain it that way then. because a 3.2 weighted is just extremely low, and i think they'll appreciate your honesty if you explain that you weren't prepared for the high school transition and really made up for it in the end. but at the same time, it is still very low. i think the average accepted gpa at this point at BU is either a 3.5 or 3.6 unweighted with like a 1330 sat (on the old scale). you could also try to blow admissions away with a great sat score and just continue improving on your gpa, cuz you're still just a first semester junior.

I know what your saying about the weighted thing...but unweighted my gpa is virtually the same - only off by maybe 1 point with fresh year and i think like a 3.5 w/o fresh year.

I just said "weighted" because thats the onyl gpa my school does cause that's how they rank. Also I get screwed by the gpa system here because they go

90-100 = 4.0 (uw)
80-89 = 3.0
70-79 = 2.0

and so on. And 1st sem. fresh year when I got 4 c's they were two 78's and two 77's so they're at least a little better than they seem.

hey listen that's fine, i was just giving my opinion, honestly the best u can do is explain how your school works and why your gpa is so low, i had to explain to them that my school doesn't rank and i got in so just do your best and see what happens. remember, im not on the admissions board so maybe everything will work out fine, maybe it wont, u just have to go for it and wait it out.

haha yeah....that's what i'll be hoping for.

I don't think you're necessarily headed straight for CGS...colleges look favorably on improvement over time. If you did better each year, that could help your chances.

yea dont get worked up about your freshman grades. If ure a junior, you have a chance at showing improvement. BU isnt necessarily looking for a 4.0, but i think that a steady increase from a 2.0 freshman year to a decent 3.6 in your senior year would send a good message. Plus if you have any good extracurrics/essays/scores, these tend to shed light into what your worth is. The GPA, if you go to a public school they dont know well, is usually the least helpful tool. Try to work really hard this term and the next.
good luck to you

Thanks daprep - that's exactly what I'm doing. But I don't go to a public school, however I don't know how much they know about my school.

Our school has these godawful scattergrams, and the one for BU has someone with a 3.27 GPA and 1280/1900 SAT getting accepted last year. And I agree with daprep; schools like improvement!
