I have this thing tomorrow at the State House regarding a scholarship banquet, and we were told to "dress nice" which I interpret as business casual - business formal. Anyways, I'm wearing a black and beige dress with black nylons and nude heels (2.5 inches) - the question I have is regarding my hair...

I have chest length black hair which I have been straightening for the past year or so on a regular basis - its naturally really curly (like ringlets) - and its subsequently SUUUPER damaged and split-endy. I'm gonna chop it all off before graduation (jaw length) but until then, I'm just gonna roll.

I was thinking of putting my hair in a high ponytail because it makes my hair look really sleek and it frames my face well. I'm not a big fan of low ponytails. However, I recently read an article that said high ponytails in a professional/business/corporate environment often look cheap, or, to quote the article, "like a welfare mother." (uh?)

Now I'm really paranoid. I pride myself on the way I present myself and I like looking really put together. The event is going to have certain politicians there, including State Reps, Senators, and possibly the Governor... I don't want to look like "a welfare mother." What are your thoughts?

When I say "high ponytail" I mean like, slightly above, below, or at the center of the back of my head.

You could try a bun or maybe a side braid? I don’t think it would be good to straighten your hair if you have a lot of split ends because its just going to make it worse.

As long as your ponytail is clean and sleek, not one of those ‘messy ponytail’ hairstyle, I think you’re good. I don’t see a problem with keeping your hair down either. You can look put together with your hair up or down, as long as you fix it so it doesn’t look like you just got out of bed.

Ponytails don’t always have to be plain. WSJ isn’t a fashion mag, so it doesn’t know that. If a ponytail flatters you the most, make sure it isn’t messy. Consider adding a bow where the hair tie is, or wrapping a piece of your hair around it.

I agree that half up, half down is the safer choice. I would recommend a cute clip or bow, not a hairtie. If you use a hairtie, it should be the color of your hair.
And with the split ends issue, I just buy barber scissors and trim them myself. It’s pressy easy and I don’t have to get my hair cut as often.
