I am a college student studying in China now and I wish to apply for the graduate program in a top university in the US. However, as it is really difficult for a chinese students to be admitted by famous universities, such as berkley or stanford, I want to attend a summer program provided by such universities in order to develop personal relationship with the professors there.

Here's my question:Recently I heard something about the undergraduate research programs in universities in the US and I think such a program is really great. Unfortunately, most of these programs are limitted to the US citizens. So I want to ask that whether anyone of you know a program fit for students like me? Whether it is possible for me to connect the professors personally and ask for such a chance?

thanks for your time this website is really great!!!

I don’t know what kind of undergraduate research programs you are referring to, so I can’t comment on that. But foreign students CAN attend summer classes in US universities, including the elite ones, if you can get an appropriate visa. The big question is can you afford it. Many charge very high tuition, just like during the regular school year. If money is not a problem, contact the school’s admission office – sometimes they have separate ‘summer session’ offices – for the details.

I guess you are referring to REUs? Depending on their funding situation, some programs will let international students participate without a stipend. (You have to ask though; they won’t advertise this on their website.) However, some programs cannot even do that if the advisers are receiving substantial compensation from the NSF for their own time.

The other option is to approach professors on your own. This works best if some of your own professors have collaborators in the US who they can refer you to.

As for the summer classes you have mentioned, I have heard about that. Actually, many american universities authority some agencies in China to help them public their programs such as summer schools, and many of them is really expensive. What’s more, some of my friends who took part in such a program think it just a waste of money as they just took some classes about language and american culture in the US. Such a program seems to me more like a trip for fun than an opportunity to study and contact with the professors.

REU stands for Research Experience for Undergraduates. Most of them are in science disciplines and funded by the NSF. Michigan’s SROP is an example of an REU. If you google REU + your major field, you should find a list of program in that field.
