I've heard about something called a supplemental application that some colleges accept, and for some it is required. Can anyone explain to me what it is, and does sending one actually increase your chances?

For example I write midi music on my computer, and someone told me I could send it in on a disk or something as a supplement to my application. But can I do that? I'm not even interested in being a music major :p

thanks anyone who knows

It's not a supplement application you're talking about, but supplementary materials. All schools require their respective supplementary applications (this usually just applies to schools using the Common App). Supplementary material is just stuff you send in if you're highly accomplished in music, painting, dancing, etc. Basically anything that can't be displayed in an essay.

I've heard that the schools will not care about your supplementary materials unless they're of extraordinary quality. If your midi music is exceptionally good, then it might increase your chances. But if not, the only thing that can happen is that you might irritate your adcom.
