A question about the definition of rolling

Hi~Nice to meet all of you! It is my first post here and my first post in a foreign forum. (Very shy~~~)
I'm a foreign student outside US. There is a term I can't understand as I put it in the title ---rolling.
I occasionally find this term after the position the school deadline, but I
can't understand its meaning. Could any of you do me a favor by explaining this?

Thanks a lot!!!

It basically means that the earlier you apply, the better chance you'll have of getting in.

For example, a school has say 5000 open spots to get in. They open their applications in August, and 1000 people apply. Assuming they all get in, only 4000 spots are left, and it'll be more competitive to get those last spots.

Now we arrive in say... April, only 100 spots are left, and 300 people apply. Only 100 of them are going to get it, so it'll be extremely competitive to get into the college.

Also, rolling tends to have the advantage of decisions coming out every so often so you don't have to wait until springtime to find out if you get in or not.

Thank you very much! I got it. One more question.. I'm now in my junior year. If I want to apply to a boardingschool in US and I didn't apply last year, is there a chance for me to get in this September as a senior?

Every boarding school is different, and you'd have to ask your own specific target. Given the information, I'm going to have to say probably not. If acceptance to boarding school is like acceptance into a college that has rolling admissions, it's probably a bit too late. Most schools don't take any more applications now.

Thanks! Your words are helpful.

there are quite a few boarding schools that will still accept applications -- especially for a student whose parents are able to pay full tuition.

Those will not be the very, very top boarding schools -- but you can still get an excellent education.

Repost your question regarding boarding schools that are still open for applicants on this forum and you will get some great help --
