When I go to UCI i am planning on downloading Korean, Chinese and Japanese songs and also youtube videos (either the video or the audio itself). Is this against the schools rule? Does this rule only apply to American media?

Shouldn’t pose a problem. As long as you aren’t illegally distributing it (maliciously or not) and as long as its from a trusted source, you’re good.

Ditto, my friend got emailed to stop one time for torrenting during lectures.

So is the rule more about distributing rather than downloading?

Mainly, but not totally. The issue that most companies have with copyrighted property is that with torrents, (unless you change the settings), people seed off you when you are downloading, thus its illegal distribution.

As for downloading, it should be fine if you’re downloading from direct sources like rapidshare, zshare, megaupload, etc. and as long as its from trusted sites.

I would stray from using limewire, bearshare, and the like.

^ good to know that rapidshare, megaupload, etc are okay to download from! hahah i always get a little nervous

Just don’t use torrents or Limewire or any P2P clients, and you’re good. Downloading illegal stuff from websites is ok but downloading legal stuff off torrents isn’t, so take that into account.

Ironic, ain’t it?

What!?!? They monitor your downloads?

Is it 1984 already?

They don’t monitor your downloads per se, but they do notice if you are torrenting (downloading/uploading) and will get on you for that.

3rd parties like NBC for example, actually monitor our ‘torrenting’ on campus as well.
