A question about writing a rec letter for the waitlisted

So I got admitted to Wash U but am not attending,
while my friend got waitlisted and really wish to attend WUSTL.

Until when should I send my recommendation letter? Is there a specific form?

Sorry? If you’re asking when/how you, as an admitted (but not attending) student should submit a recommendation on the behalf of a wait-listed student, the answer is that you really can’t, admissions doesn’t look at that sort of thing when pulling students off the waitlist.

If you feel like that’s something you simply want to do, I would just make a friendly and non-pushy paragraph of it in the same email you send to inform WashU that you will not be attending, although I wouldn’t get your friends hopes up about it sorry.

You’re going to Cornell, though? Congrats! Best of luck to both you and your friend.

thanx : )
you see, my friend was on a waitlist at Cooper Union but got admitted when a friend of his (who got admitted but isn’t going) sent a letter to the school that he recommends his friend. so i thought it might work.

Purely coincidental.

I wouldn’t think so. I understand that the letter wouldn’t work 100%, but I think the letters have certain effects. A letter worked two years ago, when a student from my high school got admitted to MIT after being waitlisted. An admissions officer at Hopkins told me to send a letter if I’d like.

He was humoring you. Think about it, why would any school take into account a recommendation letter from a student, especially one that is obviously a friend? If those had any value at all, they would ask for them from the start in addition to teachers, counselors, etc.

ROFL - to take it one step further: why would any school take into account a recommendation letter from a student who just turned it down? (“I’m not gonna join but friend A on the waitlist is a really cool dude and should be given my spot.”) Imagine the amount of mail they’d be inundated with if everyone were to do this. To take it a step further, why not have all waitlisted students submit recs from newly admitted students who actually accepted? Or maybe they could just check facebook pages to see how many “friends” someone has! LOL.

The letter will not have a positive effect. If anything, it may have a negative effect - if that is the best a candidate can offer to assist in obtaing admission of the WL - that does not seem like the candidate has a lot to offer in addition to the initial application.
