I had a question about the application review process...

I heard that UVa, along with many other colleges, review applications multiple times, and that if an update (e.g. Jan. SAT scores) is sent in, the system is flagged and the admissions officers go back and re-review in light of the update...How realistic is this given the short time frame and the large number of applications? Do all applications really get reviewed more than once by more than one person? Are mid-year reports ALWAYS an admission-determining-factor or are they sometimes not looked at at all?

I know that this is a busy time for the admissions officers, but I just wanted to know the general procedures and how applications are handled behind doors...

Nope, there is no flag. This is why the deadline is January 1st and why we chase you down to complete your files. We have a relatively small staff and over 22,000 applications to review. Sending an email update at this time of year is fine, but multiple readers will have already seen your file and made recommendations for a decision.

Yes. I’ve described our process on my blog and on here a few times.

Mid-years are not always a determining factor. Sometimes they are right in line with the 9-11 program and grades.

All mid-years are reviewed.

By the way, calling me out in a thread probably won’t get you many responses and there are periods when I don’t have time to be here. As you can see, I get to most threads, even if it means being on here late at night, on the weekends, or in the early morning. If you have questions and don’t want to call our office (there’s a dean on call each day to answer questions), use the blog.

and I apologize for calling you out… I felt that the only way I could get a straight forward, clear-cut answer was from you. I did try calling a few times, but the answers I got differed in one way or another. But I should have tried the blog. Anyway, thank you for responding!
