i’m a class 10 student and i have a few questions 4 u:

how much emphasis do colleges place on ur 9th grade marks?

how do u convert indian marks to gpa?

how much do ur board (icse) marks matter?

what chances would i stand if i want to go to the usa 4 college?

1.) Policies for various colleges differ with regard to 9th Grade marks (Stanford doesn't use them, some other colleges do)

2.) Don't worry about the GPA conversion question; colleges are familiar with the ICSE/ISC syllabus. (A good average depends upon the type of college you're applying to; anything above or at a 90 % average is competitive)

3.) Since your board exams are external and to a degree standardized; I'd imagine they'd be more important. However colleges do have differing systems of evaluating applicants.

4.) I can't really estimate your chances without any information as to your grades, extra curriculars etc.

You should aim to take the SAT I test during late 11th Grade (probably December); and the SAT Subject tests in early/mid 12th Grade since they include 12th Grade syllabus (May/October)

as for my current stats, my average would be around 85%. As for extra-curriculars, I play tennis nationally and have attened Model UNs. I also used to go for dance classes last year and always attend SUPW at school.

I see no reason for him not to at all; they're very good ECs; well received by admissions counselors. SUPW might very helpful since most people take part in that, but dancing, and MUN are worth including. Write about what you're interested in, there's no need to tailor your life to meet an adcom's expectations.

k_twin, thanks! But issacnewton also has a point...I should also try out something innovative...for example i love writing; I'd love to exploit that in my ECs. How could I do that?

hey n I thought ur a ''he''..lol..another girl...kriti will lov to c u...neways ur welcome to TheIndianThread(TiT)#15...
k_twin:I will elaborate my points a bit later..just remind me...(I hav got tons of things to sort out right now..)..just remind me later..k?..

tetrisfan: Here on CC you are going to get a lot of advice. Most of it will be conflicting.

Here's my advice, take it or leave it.

I have seen a lot of people participate in various ECs just for the sake of admissions. It's not right. The whole point of listing out your ECs is to show colleges what you choose to do in your free time. If you do something just to please the adcoms, then you're doing a disservice to yourself and to the admissions process.

By listing your ECs exactly the way they are if you get rejected then maybe that place was not right for you to begin with. You really can't say what works in the admissions process and what doesn't. However, what you can say with certainty is that if you've portrayed yourself exactly as you are then at least you've done what you're supposed to do. And trust me, you will not be punished for that.
