When it’s comes to skill/ key parts of my life I can really think of one major important thing , I love to self teach myself. Could that considered a skill or something important to write about because I’ve taught myself basic electrical engineer , instruments, advanced subject and stuff like that . Its part of what makes me ,me
You could perhaps write that in your essay or maybe group all of those into 1 activity on your common app.
Colleges would not really value that highly as they have no basis to see your achievement. Not that anyone does not believe you but you need (awards, ec, work) to validate and back up your claims.
@thecoolboy1234 for items ive taught myself from music i have leadership and competition awards . for items like computer science i have uil awards . For electrical engineering i am prototyping an invention estimated to finish around the time of applications for colleges . i can match alot of what ive learned to awards . do you think that would help ?
Yes
“Its part of what makes me ,me”
Does not matter what it is. If you can say that about your activities, then definitely write about it.
Get your GC to back this up in his/her LoR. What intended major? For many colleges, this curiosity is good. You do have to decide how to present yourself in the best light. And that’s a matter of wisely picking colleges where your actual record shows them you can take on their challenges and thrive- and on knowing what those colleges are truly about, what they look for, so you can realistically match yourself. Get curious about that.
@Davidhtx Yes it most definitely will help. And like the above poster said getting your LoR (from GC, professors) that can back up your claims will also help alot to show what kind of person you are!
@lookingforward how would you say to portray this skill in good way to colleges ?
@lookingforward I’m going to major in mechanical engineering
We don’t know your current college targets or your hs record, especially in math and science classes. Or the test scores. In general, a curious mindset is good for engineering. But you need to be able to show, not just tell. I don’t mean awards. But you can’t just say you taught yourself EE. It’s a big field and experience matters. Teamwork is important.
Are you in robotics or other science or math activities? Do your teachers see this curiosity and can they write about it?
Make sure you know what your targets look for.
As for science activities , the only thing I can really say is a founding member of a cross district vex robotics team m
@lookingforward thanks for all the advice. I appreciate it .
